4.0 out of 5 stars Updated Gin Rummy, February 13, 2008

I purchased this as an extra gift for my nephew for Christmas. We all wound up playing it right away. It's a dragon take on gin rummy with a few twists. We managed to keep kids who were 8, 14 and 17 and a few adults busy for a while. Everyone enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, pretty, Dragon Rummy, June 12, 2008

This review is from: Sababa Dragonology: Hatch Card Game (Toy)
My friends and I enjoy card games that have strategy and are also easy enough to converse while playing. This game has more to it than the usual rummy, and the cards are pretty too. My seven yr old grandson is able to play with us when reminded what the dragons, tools, and dragon eggs do to the regular rummy game. It also goes a bit faster than a regular 500pt. rummy game.

My ONLY criticism is that the deck suits (jewels!) only go up to number 8, and I think up to 12 would be better. The largest number of people who can play with the deck you get is four. Buy Two decks if you like to play with more than four. Also there are a couple of obscure spots in the rules. We realized that the Marsupial dragon not only makes any card wild, but that the wild card can act as a cross piece ie if the wild card is a three, it can be a 1-2-3 in a run and ALSO a 3-3-3 in a set, as the middle card.

We decided not to count the face value of the jewel cards, but to give them the one point value that the rules suggest so as not to lessen the sting of the dragon eggs.

I recommend this game highly for card players who like a pretty deck and a twist on a favorite standby.

This review is from: Sababa Dragonology: Hatch Card Game (Toy)
When I bought this game for my dragon-loving daughter (7), I really thought it came with jewels! It definitely does not come with real (fake) jewels. The jewels are the suits on the cards. It's essentially a game of gin or gin rummy with dragon action cards, but the numbers only go up to eight. We lost the directions immediately, so I'm still not sure whether a sequence has to be three cards or four, and the dragon action cards are a bit vague, but it comes in a very cool tin (that I anticipate outlasting the card game), and once my daughter gets the basic gin game down, I think it will be fun.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: the cards smell really weird! Very strong sort of plastic musty smell.
