I think they wrote the rules for this game in an hour, without trying to play it. There have to be like 100 possible subjects for clarification. Can you pillage a pillage? What happens if you get multiple bad cards (black spot, hurricane, sea monster) in your starting hand? Can you have multiple crew cards? Does a battle canceled by reflection still use weapon cards? Can you wager zero on a battle just to force your opponent to discard a better weapons card than you and/or to dock on a favorable spot? What happens if your rolls tie in a battle? Can you bury and recover treasure on one turn and does a treasure map card allow you to recover all treasure on an island, or one persons treasure? How can you really decide whether every possible direction on the board is close enough to the compass direction? How often should you respin the compass? When you 'play' a crew card does it remain in your hand? Some cards mention when you can play them and whether they take your turn to play, others do not. Take any board game, retract 50% of the rule details with a black marker, and you have this game. Its a legalistic argument in a box.

I agree with the previous review that the creators of the game must have rushed the rules without playing a few games; you can tell the creators were banking on popularity of the book to develop sales. We have a ton of questions about ambiguous scenarios and end up having to make up our own rules just to get by. The game looks great with nice pieces but is very monotonous and will hold our attention for a limited time (once the novelty of the pieces is outweighed by our frustration and confusion). We are a big game-family, our child only pulls this one out because the pieces are fun to play with (my wife and I then groan that we have to endure it), we would've gotten more mileage from buying a pirate toy.
