5.0 out of 5 stars Sabatier Midnight Blue Cannes Dinnerware
I am very pleased with this set; I also ordered the matching flatware. Since I am not a "china" person, I ordered this set to use in my formal dining room and it looks great with my 18th Century style cherry furniture. The deep brown trim on the edges of the dinnerware and the cherry furniture compliment each other and make for a nice, put-together look. I would also like to say that the cups are HUGE. I do hope Sabatier comes out with more matching pieces such as S&P shakers and a creamer and sugar bowl.

4.0 out of 5 stars oooh- wow!, April 26, 2002
This review is from: Sabatier Burgundy Cannes 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 (Kitchen)
So I rated it a 4... it would have been a 5 had ALL of the pieces arrived unchipped and unbroken. (2 cups broke on their way to my doorstep. Was it the UPS lady that doesn't like me? I don't know:) I do however love the rest of my new dinnerware set. I like the weight, the flow of the design, the color and the size. Nice and heavy, but too heavy. It's not cheap looking. The set is quite pretty actually - it has a deep burgundy tone with a shimmer of effervesance. All the pieces are nicely sized. The plates work for salads and ribs. The bowls are just awesome. I'm not a formal china type - so this set suits my "upper-end casual taste" quite nicely. P.S. Amazon is sending me a replacement sent so I can ship back to broken set. I'm happy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended, September 9, 2004
These dishes are not for everyday use. I give them one star for fabulous style and colors (I bought three different colors), but that's the most I can give them. These dishes chip very, very easily, and the underlying ceramic is bright white, so you really can't miss the chips. Plus, I'm not sure that I buy the "dishwasher safe" label, because these get unbelievably hot after short periods in the microwave, and change color also. I DO NOT recommend that you purchase these if you plan to actually use them.

So I have kept up with these reviews, and have secretly held that all of these people whom have had problems with these dishes must have unruly children or the likes. However today, after slightly grazing a dinner plate with a plastic spatula and finding yet another chip, I offer this handy tip to those who own or may own these dishes: a waterproof black marker covers up the nicks quite well. The black (compared to blue) seems to blend in with the black trim and is virtually unnoticeable. For those wavering: I preordered 3 sets @ [$$$] ea - at the current price forget it and I would give 1 star.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!, December 31, 2002

I ordered this set about 8 months ago in the blue. Since then it has chipped, faded, and generally disappointed me. When I first got it, I was very pleased. I guess if you hand wash it, it would last longer...but who wants to? I gave my beautiful Dansk away because I thought I was sick of it to replace it with this. Sighhhhhh...I guess I learned my lesson! You get what you pay for, folks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Simply terrible, November 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sabatier Burgundy Cannes 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 (Kitchen)
I purchased 3 sets of these dishes and in less than a year- about 1/4 of them have numerous chips. These are brittle dishes and simply can not hold up to daily use. Very disappointing, to say the least.

As a note, aesthetically this color (burgundy) does not compliment many foods. While many folks might not pay attention to this, I have since taken note of food presentation and how color/design can (and does!) affect the overall appearance of the food presented.
This color, as much as I like it, does little or worse for the aesthetic value to many of the foods we prepare.

Color aside, I can not recommend these dishes to anyone. Even when taking the greatest of care, they still manage to chip.
Oh! Lest I forget, while these dishes state "microwave safe", when heating up dishes/liquids for even a short time, these dishes can become quite *HOT* to the touch!

It's definitely time for Sabatier to retire this line of dinnerware, spare their name and the disappointment their customers will experience shortly after purchasing this set.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but fragile, December 21, 2002

I love my Cannes dishes but, unfortunately they chipped almost immediately. I have now had a set of 12 for a little less than a year and am replacing the entire set because of so many chips on virtually every dish.

I ordered two sets of the midnight blue about 2 months ago. I think its a great looking set of dishes, very practical, and very good value. The bowls are perfect for pasta or a big salad, and the cups are nice and big.

3.0 out of 5 stars Updated review: these are not durable, November 21, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sabatier Burgundy Cannes 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 (Kitchen)
I needed new everyday dishes that could go well for entertaining as I don't have "fine china." I shopped all the kitchen stores, the malls, and catalogs, but these were hands-down the best value for the money.

The plates are large, European-style, with a scalloped edge (gadroon?) and deep centers. There are no saucers, just large mugs. I got the burgundy color, which has a black accent on the rim and black spatters to give a rustic look. The bowls have large flat rims. They are made of a pottery-stoneware but seem rugged enough.

Alas, these dishes are not durable. I lost quite a few plates to chips because the pottery is soft. These are inexpensive, so you could use them for occasional table settings, and they look nicely French Provence style, but for everyday use they are not durable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally pleased, November 17, 2003

I ordered a set of both the green, burgandy and yellow. I think the look is great, can be formal or informal. I have had Pfaltzgraff for some time and these are as heavy if not heavier. Because they are hand cast, the edges are thinner in spots, but I haven't had any trouble with chipping like some of the other reviewers have. I don't wash them any differently than my other ones - bottom rack of the dishwasher.
