This set of knives belongs in the Pantheon of Miserable Products. It is, bar none, the worst purchase I have made in my adult life. Don't be seduced by the low,and seemingly irresistible, asking price. It's not even worth that drastically reduced amount. I should have heeded the reviews from others who said that these knives practically rust in front of your eyes. I am very conscientious about washing my knives in hot soapy water and drying them right away, but these blades are IMPOSSIBLE to safeguard from corrosion. Finally, as a further knife to the heart (so to speak...), their cutting properties are minimal. I have sliced the tips of two fingers trying to get these dull blades through bread and vegetables. Unless you get a thrill from being maimed, avoid this cutlery like the plague. I wish I had sent them back almost immediately.

...Many companies use the "Sabatier" name, and the $240 "list price" makes you think these are the real thing, but they're not. The real ones are forged, not stamped. They have wooden riveted handles, not synthetic. And professional knives are not dishwasher-safe. ...

I was going to purchase this as a gift for my father, but when he said he already got a new set of knives, I started thinking of myself. I've used the same old set of knives by a maker that I do not believe even exists anymore. I was a bit taken back by the inexpensive price listed here on Amazon, but I figured this was cheaper than Faberware's professional line, what did I have to lose? Absolutely nothing! My old set had edges not even 4cm wide, looking at the deep edge of these knives made me immediately notice the quality. I have rather small hands, but these knives, even the chef's knife, fit easily and comfortably in my hands. They felt well balanced in my hands and not top heavy like many brands felt in my hand (where the blade portion is much heavier than the handle, and the knife feels like its falling into your food). The razor sharp edges right out of the box were more than I'd ever want. I immediately was able to cut up potatoes, a london broil as well as a tomato with great ease! What a difference quality makes! Instead of mashing the roast in order to cut it, these knives easily cut right through the meat with no mashing, and then easily through the potato and then right through the tomato. I've never handled knives like this before. Also these knives are quite attractive with their silver logos on the ends of the knives and the all black handle (no rivets). The block looks gorgeous in my kitchen and holds the knives well. The only other thing I could ask for would be a block with the knife sharpeners inside. Maybe thats a cheap block, I dont know, but its always been a nice feature in previous blocks I've owned. Also I'd love to see a filet knife in the extra slot in the block. I guess Sabitier wants you to buy one of theirs, but Amazon isnt carrying the matching filet knife so far. Now, I'm sure for those who are familiar with using more professional grade knives, this may very well not be a good set for them. Since I am not familiar with [expensive] knives, I wouldnt know the difference. But I will say that these knives are wonderful for your home cook who's not making gourmet meals, but more meat and potatoes for their family. I'm sure that you'll agree that this is definitely the most bang for your knife buck

List Price Is A Joke - Average Quality Knife Set,

This review is from: Sabatier ChefStar 14-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I've had these knives for several months now. I've had no rust problems, but they're average knives at best. The list price must have been dreamed up in some other currency or in wishful thinking. I got $20 worth and that's it. It's a shame that a real list price isn't published; this is very deceiving and wrong.

This Knife Set sucks, even for a college student,

I've been using this knife set for a couple weeks now, and I am a college student at UC Berkeley. I can honestly say this was a waste of my money. There was rust on the knives after my first use and the block set is poorly made. There is dried glue all over the wooden block, as if a 5 year old put it together. DONT buy this product unless you got $20 to waste.

This certainly looked like it would be a nice set, and considering the price, I was fine with overlooking the cheap black handles, but I was VERY DISAPPOINTED when I washed some of these knives and they RUSTED! High Carbon Stainless Steel? I don't think so!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY on this set!!!

I agree with many of the reviews. You can buy one of the steak knives at the dollar store for a dollar. So, you have a dollar per piece... not a bad deal. Heck, use them until they die and then use the box for other knives. One lady explained it very good. Whenever something is a SET... they always count the container as one piece. The photo is deceiving though, b/c they moved one of the top knives down a row. There are 13 knives and 1 block = 14 pieces. Not worth returning, not that impressed... but not too disappointing. I've seen worse. Anything made in China is of this quality (kitchen products).
No use crying over a cheap set of knives. ; )

Sabatier ChefStar Knife Block Just Doesn't Cut It!,

The price seemed too good to be true...and it was... The knife block looks cheap and there is an empty slot for you to fill in "with your own knife;" it just looks like oneof the knives is missing. Go to a high-end department store and buy the Farberware KnifeBlock set for same price and you'll be just as happy.

Ok... Let's set the record straight... This is not a... top line Sabatier... but for a little more than [$$] bucks, it is a great value. Will it last years and years? Who knows. But for someone just starting to really get into cooking, it provides a great tool set to learn with, maybe in 5 years I'll see the value in trading up.

Sabaiter (and/or Amazon) repeatedly have been selling these knives at a very small fraction (7% or so) of the original list price. These knives rust unless you hand wash and the quality sucks. However, if you are here the first time, you'll think this is a great deal. Somewhere along the line, these companies need to realize that the street price is nowhere near the list. The ONLY reason for putting a very high (15 times?) list REPEATEDLY (this in not a 1-time event) is to bilk people. Should be a law against this.
