Sabatier Laguiole 6-Piece Steak Knife Set in Wood Storage Tray, Stainless Steel

I bought one of these sets last fall (2001) and I gave them 5 stars considering the price paid. I bought another set in June 2002 and they are different knives. The blades are different - the serration pattern is a bit different and the new ones do not cut as well as the ones bought last year. Also, the handles are so poorly assembled, with sharp edges, you can easily cut your hand. So, what happened between fall and spring?

I will give them 2 stars only because the previous set I bought is great. What you are likely to get now does not deserve any star.

... Bent or crooked blades (depending on the knife you're looking at), broken or ground off points and stamped sheet type stainless steel for the handles. These things would be more valuable if melted down and sold for scrap.

$$$ is cheap for a good set of steak knives which these are not. Given a choice, I'd go with Ginsu.

We have been absolutely delighted with this set of knives. They have great balance, feel pleasing in your hand, and cut flawlessly. What really sets them apart, though, is the style -- most steak knives are either dark-handled, bulky, or both, so you only want to brink them out when you're actually tackling a hunk of red meat. The slim, silver silhouette of this Laguiole fits in unobtrusively with your regular flatware, so you may find yourself using them far more often. Even a chicken dinner turns out to benefit from sharp knives. Our table knives don't make it out of the drawer much at dinner time these days!

The reason I got this, was that I was in Provence, France 2 years ago and saw these knives. They were gorgeous, these have the name, but that is it. There are a cheap production model of the real thing. I was very disappointed. The blade is reminicent of the ginsu TV add product. The handle, a work of art on the original, look like the handles on the cutlery in a cheap picnic basket kit. I originally got these for my husband who is both French and a chef. I'm going to give it to my son (11), who likes steaks instead. He hasn't seen the "real" Laguiole, hopefully by the time he is old enough to know the difference these will have been lost down the disposal or some other fate.
Like they say: "If it's too good to be true, it probally is!"

I got these for a Christmas gift for my parents, and I was embarrassed to give them. They came in a wooden block that was shrink-wrapped and included a healty dose of the saw dust that had been removed when the knife slots were routed out. Once we opened them, we found the knives to be mass-production low-quality. Just not what you'd expect for a set of steak knives in this price range. Now... I'm not saying that these were expensive, but what I mean is... they looked like a seven-dollar set of knives.

This is an excellent product. Even my 12 year old enjoys cutting her own meat with this knife. They are sharp, and glide through the meat without effort. I love the weight and feel - everyone on my Christmas list will be getting a set of these next year!

Ordered the Sabatier Laguiole steak knives based on reputation. When they arrived, we were very disappointed. They seemed cheap and poorly made. We returned them.

Go anywhere in France and you will see these fabulous knives. Rich or poor, you will see these teriffic knives in every household. They are truly a great functional kife, as well as being ultra cool. I recommend this set very highly.

The knives are a favorite of mine. The handle fits well in my hand, it cuts beautifully, and it looks georgeous in the table setting. My only problem with it is that the box it comes in should be a good storage unit. It is splintery and difficult to remove the knives from. I do recommend the knives. They're great, but the box doesn't cut the mustard.
