Product Description

Amazon.com Review

So strikingly designed it's a conversation piece, this folding corkscrew has a stainless-steel spiral, curved foil-cutting blade, and handle accents setting off its warm, rosewood handle. The design was inspired by the celebrated Laguiole knife, which originated in 1829 in a French mountain village of the same name. Farmers folded the knives into their pockets, just as this corkscrew can be folded to a compact 4-1/2 inches. Today, Laguiole products are made in Thiers, the French cutlery center, according to the original design. Elongated pistol-grip handles are secured by three rivets and decorated with a tiny stainless-steel bee, homage to the bee on Napoleon I's Imperial emblem. The corkscrew comes in a wood tray for storage on the counter or in a drawer. --Fred Brack

1.0 out of 5 stars Laguiole Name sullied!, April 11, 2003

This review is from: Sabatier Laguiole Rosewood Corkscrew in Wood Storage Tray (Kitchen)
Sabatier should be ashamed of themselves for producing this inferior product under the vaunted Laguiole name. For those who are not in the know, Laguiole is a famous village in France renowned for their knives, corkscrews, swords and other sharp objects. A good Laguiole corkscrew costs $60 to $125 and is hand-made with the finest workmanship. Go to the best restaurants in Paris and you will find the sommeliers and waiters there using Laguiole corkscrews to open the wines. There is no other word to describe this Sabatier Laguile corkscrew except "JUNK." The rosewood is coarse, badly in need of fine sanding, and there are shallow striations across it -- very poor quality control in the manufacturering process. The chrome metal parts have very poor quality plating on them. The worst problem is that the metal catch that sits on the wine bottle's mouth is too wide. It constantly slips off the bottle's mouth as I try to pull the cork out. The cheap rough wood case that comes with the corkscrew only adds to the inferior look and feel of the product. Spend the money on a plastic screwpull instead!

1.0 out of 5 stars This is a piece of JUNK - I wouldn't take it for free!, February 11, 2004

What a MISTAKE it was buying this useless thing! I would have given it ZERO stars, but 1 star is the lowest you can go. I thought this might be an elegant utensil for the bar or table.I like the simplicity of a waiter's corkscrew, and with the Laguiole name attached, how could you go wrong? Well, I'll tell you. This is a clunky looking, poorly finished knock-off, and worse still, it literally DOES NOT FUNCTION. The handle is so chunky, that they had to make the folding pry-hook extra wide to fit it. So wide, in fact, that it no longer fits on the lip of a wine bottle! DUH! It's so bad, that you are much more likely to break the bottle, or worse, hurt yourself (really, no kidding) than you are to open the wine. The five dollar plastic and pot-metal Chinese jobs by the register at your liquor store will work better! The touted wooden tray is basically nothing more than a block of wood routed out to hold the "Laguiole" in an awkward open position. Why bother? If you want a good Waiter's corkscrew, I highly recommend the Le Cepage Stainless which is also available on Amazon for $20 or less (it is currently on sale for $16.96). It doesn't have the fancy looks or the "wooden tray," but what it is is a good basic design, quality construction, a Teflon worm, and best of all, it actually does the job! All at 2/3's the price of this counterfeit piece of trash!

The legendary Laguiole name drew me to this product. I collect pocket knives and corkscrews and know fine workmanship so I could not believe my luck when I saw this product offered at a bargain basement price. Well, once again, price reflects the quality. The "worm" feels flimsy and doesn't seem like it's going to last. The first time I opened a bottle, it was difficult to get the screw started. Also, the lever is too wide to easily attach to the lip of a wine bottle - a very strange design indeed. I have a 30 year old "lever" or waiter corkscrew I bought at the old Hoffritz for Cutlery in the Port of Authority terminal in NYC. It has opened a heck of a lot of bottles and its design is light years ahead of this one. I also have a $5.00 cork screw I just bought at a Winery in Tuscany and it blows the doors off this baby. Maybe you should go to a store and check the design out before buying. You will probably make a different purchase. It came in a pretty box, though!
