Laguiole Name sullied!,
By "45mouton" (Arlington, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sabatier Laguiole Rosewood Corkscrew in Wood Storage Tray (Kitchen)
Sabatier should be ashamed of themselves for producing this inferior product under the vaunted Laguiole name. For those who are not in the know, Laguiole is a famous village in France renowned for their knives, corkscrews, swords and other sharp objects. A good Laguiole corkscrew costs $60 to $125 and is hand-made with the finest workmanship. Go to the best restaurants in Paris and you will find the sommeliers and waiters there using Laguiole corkscrews to open the wines. There is no other word to describe this Sabatier Laguile corkscrew except "JUNK." The rosewood is coarse, badly in need of fine sanding, and there are shallow striations across it -- very poor quality control in the manufacturering process. The chrome metal parts have very poor quality plating on them. The worst problem is that the metal catch that sits on the wine bottle's mouth is too wide. It constantly slips off the bottle's mouth as I try to pull the cork out. The cheap rough wood case that comes with the corkscrew only adds to the inferior look and feel of the product. Spend the money on a plastic screwpull instead!

This is a piece of JUNK - I wouldn't take it for free!,

What a MISTAKE it was buying this useless thing! I would have given it ZERO stars, but 1 star is the lowest you can go. I thought this might be an elegant utensil for the bar or table.I like the simplicity of a waiter's corkscrew, and with the Laguiole name attached, how could you go wrong? Well, I'll tell you. This is a clunky looking, poorly finished knock-off, and worse still, it literally DOES NOT FUNCTION. The handle is so chunky, that they had to make the folding pry-hook extra wide to fit it. So wide, in fact, that it no longer fits on the lip of a wine bottle! DUH! It's so bad, that you are much more likely to break the bottle, or worse, hurt yourself (really, no kidding) than you are to open the wine. The five dollar plastic and pot-metal Chinese jobs by the register at your liquor store will work better! The touted wooden tray is basically nothing more than a block of wood routed out to hold the "Laguiole" in an awkward open position. Why bother? If you want a good Waiter's corkscrew, I highly recommend the Le Cepage Stainless which is also available on Amazon for $20 or less (it is currently on sale for $16.96). It doesn't have the fancy looks or the "wooden tray," but what it is is a good basic design, quality construction, a Teflon worm, and best of all, it actually does the job! All at 2/3's the price of this counterfeit piece of trash!

The legendary Laguiole name drew me to this product. I collect pocket knives and corkscrews and know fine workmanship so I could not believe my luck when I saw this product offered at a bargain basement price. Well, once again, price reflects the quality. The "worm" feels flimsy and doesn't seem like it's going to last. The first time I opened a bottle, it was difficult to get the screw started. Also, the lever is too wide to easily attach to the lip of a wine bottle - a very strange design indeed. I have a 30 year old "lever" or waiter corkscrew I bought at the old Hoffritz for Cutlery in the Port of Authority terminal in NYC. It has opened a heck of a lot of bottles and its design is light years ahead of this one. I also have a $5.00 cork screw I just bought at a Winery in Tuscany and it blows the doors off this baby. Maybe you should go to a store and check the design out before buying. You will probably make a different purchase. It came in a pretty box, though!

This is not a Lagioule, and to call it that besmirches the fine name. I have bought Lagioule knives and corkscrews in France, so I bought this expecting the same quality. The workmanship is terrible, and it's sad and cheap. I sent it back. Don't waste your money, buy an authentic Lagioule.

I purchased this as a gift for a friend at Xmas. For the money I paid, I wasn't expecting fireworks. However, I WAS expecting the thing not to BREAK APART the first time it was ever used. I really am not concerned with the Laguiole name; the thing costs under $30 after all. I just wanted a decent corkscrew to give as a gift. Embarrassing.

I don't know where this came from, but it's certainly a cheap fake looking piece of garbage! The cutter doesn't work properly, the screw and pry are a joke and the metal looks like it's been spray painted to look like steel (which it definitly doesn't!) A pretty embarrassing gift to give!!! I only rated it a "1" because there wasn't anything lower!

Sabatier must have sold out and this is too bad for what was formally a respected brand name. There are better quality corkscrews at the point of purchase display at the liquor store. The craftsmanship was very poor and the assembly of parts as bad as a Yugo. How does it actually work? Not very well.

Dumbfounded,

This was an item that I thought would be a great to have on the restaurant floor but I was wrong. The first time I tried to cut the foil on a bottle of wine it would not cut. I was dumbfounded. When I tried to open a bottle of San Pelligrino I broke off the top portion of the bottle because the bottle opener would not properly fit on there. It launched half way across the room. This corkscrew was not useful at all. I would buy a real Laguiole not a imitator such as this.

Don't Touch It!,

This product is a proverbial "dog with fleas." Stay away from it! IT DOESN'T WORK. The only reason I don't send it back is, for the price I paid, it's not worth the time and additional shipping cost. How anyone can try to sell this thing is almost criminal. Next time I'll read the reviews!
