4.0 out of 5 stars Good Price/Quality Combo
Hey, for 30 bucks or so you cannot get such a good set of knives. I've worked as a meat cutter, and these knives have a good "feel" and cut even tough cuts of meat well. Concur with the comments about the block (el cheapo), but overall value here is very good, meriting four stars!

I purchased a very similar set of Sabatier Precision knives. Overall I was disappointed in them. I paid a similar price for the set I have, for as many pieces, they are oriented in the block differently, otherwise the same knives. I have given a somewhat nuetral 3, so I will address the pros and cons from my perspective...The blades seem to be manufactured of a decent quality of stainless steel and will take an edge. The scissors are one of the better pieces in the set, smooth operation and sharp. The 8 inch chefs knife, is reasonably well balance. The bread knife works fairly well. The handles are more attractive than inexpensive wooden handles would be after several months of washings. Con's: The handles are not as polished as they could be. The interface between the handle and the blade could be tighter, smother on some pieces in the set. The sharpening steel was knicked dinged, and scratched, overall poorly made. It is useless as it catches and grabs at the blade moving across it and it seems poorly made with respect to handle and ring as well. The serrations on the steak knives are too close and two deep, they tend to be jagged. I feel like I am sawing with them instead of cutting. They snag a cloth when being washed or dried. Knives other than the chef's are shaped in such a way that there is no room for the users knuckles, making it so that only the outer most half or third of blade can be used in many cases. If someone wants a full set of knives to use to start a kitchen, or to replace another set of inexpensive knives they are comparable to similarly priced sets found in large discount stores nation wide. However the shape of the knives may make some sets a better value...

3.0 out of 5 stars decent knives, pathetic block, May 2, 2003
This review is from: Sabatier Precision 14-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
These will be the knives you keep in the drawer, not on the counter for show. They seem decently sharp, and the handles look good for being plastic. ... Don't expect a lot. you'll get a few good knives that will do the cutting job. If you're looking for that sweet set you can proudly display to impress the neighbors, this set is definitely not it. The block is made from particle board and plywood...

2.0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For -- This is No Exception, April 29, 2002

Don't be misled by the Sabatier name, here. These are [low priced] imports trading off of a name license (note "Sabatier Precision"). Why this fine knife-maker would tarnish its name with these subgrade knives is anybody's guess. In practicality, these knives are no different from the non-serrated sets one would see at ..other discount stores for about the same (discounted) price seen here. The materials are simply passable, the handles okay. The blades are made of thin, [low priced] steel that do not hold an edge. Forget the honing tool that comes with this set-- you will need a sharpening stone to repeatedly add an edge to these knives. Even then, this will not last beyond a few uses. This set may whet your appetite for the feel of a good, heavy, well-gripped and balanced knife, but you will have to look elsewhere for one that actually stays sharp and does what it is supposed to do.

1.0 out of 5 stars I know it looks like a great deal- but DON'T DO IT!, September 19, 2003

Based on previous reviews, I wasn't expecting the same Sabatier knives you would get for the 'suggested retail price' at Williams-Sonoma. But I also wasn't expecting knives that wobble on their handles, rust if they're not wiped completely dry after hand-washing, and lose their edge almost immediately. Save the $$ and buy some real knives one at a time, if you have to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat them for the price, September 24, 2002

I bought these on a lark, simply because of the Sabatier name and the ridiculously low price. I've seen mis-priced products on Amazon before, and I suspected that either my order would be cancelled or I would get a cheap product. I am quite pleasantly surprised. I think the price is as low as it is because a) the knives are made in China (surprise, surprise) instead of being the top-line French knives, and b) there is an empty slot in the block, which probably makes the set a factory second. For me, that's just a place to put another favorite knife that I already own.

In our case, the purchase was almost justified by the use and care instructions on the box. We'd been using a homemade Formica cutting board, and have subsequently realized that we've been dulling our blades by cutting on the wrong surfaces. No evidence of pitting or dulling so far, and these babies are indeed razor-sharp. They are heavier than our previous set of knives, which were physically larger. That suggests to me that the steel is better.

The bottom line is, they cut my food with the greatest of ease. Time will tell how well they hold an edge, but I think this is going to end up being one of the better deals I've ever received. ... I hear there is a new generation of soft plastic cutting boards that will preserve the edges of your blades, which are probably worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for the price, November 11, 2003
By A Customer
For the price and value, I do not see why this isn't rated 5 stars. It clearly states on the box hand was and dry immediately (which is a known kitchen rule for any item with a wood handle anyway). So, anyone who has trouble with rust it is because they do not care for their knives properly as knives should never be placed in a dishwasher. It's like complaining about washing a wool sweater and being confused as the why it shrunk and now looks bad even though the tag says dry clean only- care is everything. As far as price goes, and with the free shiping I received I couldn't be happier. Looks like it will make a great Christmas gift for my mother. I rate this 10 stars, and always read directions when you buy something; that is why directions are included.

I am very pleased with both the quality of the steel and the construction of the knives! I have worked as an Executive Chef in Clubs and Resorts for over 25 years and while I thought this deal was too good to be true for the price, I still purchased it for my home. I actually found them to be of exceptional quality for an exceptional value! I have a good set of the , so the other reviewer says, "Store Quality" knives and find THIS set to be superior! Don't get me wrong. They don't compare to my set at my establishemnt but, I have close to... invested it those tools! You do get EXACTLY what you pay for here! An excellent set of knives for your home!

Or, in this case, perhaps a little less. Cheesy block, and the steak knives rusted on my first use. If anyone figures out what the extra slot in the block is for, please let me know ...

Hey, how much can you complain for a 14 piece knife set for [$$]? Technically, not that much I would think.

However, these knives actually do not perform to the level of more expensive knives. They work fine as a [$$] set, but don't expect high performance from these...knives. So far mine have rusted substantially and do not hold an edge well.

I'm not disappointed with the purchase at all-- I wasn't expecting a set of Henckels-- and as long as you keep your expectations low they are a fine value.
