I was under the impression Sabatier was a French product. This set is made in China. Knives were dull upon arrival, they are tough to sharpen and do not hold an edge when sharp. They also started to rust after the first time in the dishwasher. I am very disappointed with these knives and will return them ASAP.

While this knife set is perfectly functional and available at what seems like an exceptional price, I just wanted to give other consumers a heads-up that it's not made in France like other fine Sabatier products. (In fact, when I originally opened the box, I wondered if it was authentic Sabatier. I'm still not sure.) This set is printed as having been manufactured in China and is clearly not as fine as what you think you might be getting because of the "Sabatier" name. Having said that, it's available at a good price and if you're just looking for a starter set, this might be the right set for you. Just don't expect the traditional France-made Sabatier quality.

First, realize that I bought this set while it was on special, which was a great price. The reviews I read here were mixed, but I figured for the price, at worst these could be a set for rough use and disposable if necessary.

When they arrived, I was not the least bit disappointed. There was not a single flaw on any of the knives, all were reasonably sharp (sharpened up even better on the included steel)They were uniformly ground and not at all sloppy. They have the main features you look for in a knife, high carbon SS, full tangs, solid rivets, etc. The handles are composite, nothing fancy but look very durable.

Yes, this is the lowest Sabatier line (most likely borrowing their name to the manufacurer, but I'm sure they wouldn't do so If they weren't satisfied with the quality and they probably impose cetain standards)and yes made in China not France, but still I think of good quality and I've not seen better (or even close)for near the price I paid. I wish they were still on special as I would be buying them a X-mas gifts.

In all, I got much more than I expected for the price, more even than I would expect for the current Amazon.com price. (I do agree with other reviewers that the MSRP listed is a little out of line on the high side)

Note that one reviewer who claimed to know from knives, complained that they rusted the first time he put them in a dishwasher. Discard this review, as anyone who knows anything about good knives, knows better than to put tham in a dishwasher. The course soap dulls them and long drying time does encourage rust. Good knives are made of high carbon steel to hold an edge. This type of steel is suceptible to rust if left wet. Good knives should be washed and wiped dry immediately after (which is easy).

Bottom line: If you want the best knives available, pay several hundred for Hencels' or Sabatier's best line. If you want a great deal on knives that are excellent quality (more than good enough for most of us, and a magnitude above what various discount or department stores carry) buy these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Performs good but wish they looked better !, September 27, 2001

I got the Set today and my wife and put it to immediate use..Our observations

1. Good Material quality- Cuts well- Good value for MONEY!
2. Wood (?) Handles could have been better
3. Mediocre finish. In fact we initially thought it had been used before ! ( the metal finish IS poor ! but the metal quality seems to be good )

Having seen the Real McCoy in Stores, I would conclude that this is a Great set to begin with but an culinary enthusiast should go for the" Made in France" label !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sabatier 15-Piece Knife Set--Good Brand and Great Buy, April 19, 2001
By

This review is from: Sabatier Precision 15-Piece Knife Set with Block (Kitchen)
Sabatier knives have been made in Thiers, France for over 160 years, and it is one of the top three brands of cutlery chosen by European home chefs. The other two brands are J.A. Henckels and Wüsthof-Trident (both made in Germany). Within these three brands, one will find several lines with different price points, different constructions, and different compositions. The best lines of knives in any brand will have full tang construction, like these Sabatier knives. The top-of the line knives in the other two brands are the J.A. Henckels's Professional "S" series and the Wüsthof-Trident Classic Collection, (which is my favorite--I own over forty pieces of Wüsthof-Trident classic cutlery, kitchen scissors, five gadgets, three oak slant knife blocks, and an executive chef's case, for travel.) I put together my collection over time, adding items when I would have a specific need, and when I would find a good sale price.

While a knife may have full tang construction, the composition of the handle and blade may vary. My first chef's knife was a Sabatier au Carbonne, which was made of full carbon steel so it became darkened over time. Also, because it spent time soaking in water, it became rusted. For a home chef, the best choices in cutlery are those which are traditionally forged from a single blank of high carbon, no-stain steel. While I like wooden knives with "classic" riveted handles, others prefer seamless molded polypropylene handles on their fine cutlery because these knives may be more hygenic and ergonomic.

This Sabatier 15-Piece Precision Knife Set (with block) is a great buy for anyone who needs some reasonably good kitchen cutlery, and who may not want to invest a lot of time and money right now in doing comparison shopping among brands. Also, the choice of high quality cutlery is very individualistic--one needs to experience the heft of the blade and feel of the handle in one's hand.

These knives are probably too lightweight for a serious home chef, and they will not hold the same edge as a high carbon, no-stain steel blade or Sabatier au Carbonne blade. I recommend this set for those cooks who must share their kitchens with people who do not know how to care for professional knives, or for those who need a basic set while they acquire better knives. This set includes all the basics, plus six steak knives, kitchen shears, and sharpening steel. All I would add to this collection would be a tomato knife and poultry shears.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great set, no matter where it's made, December 9, 2001

This review is from: Sabatier Precision 15-Piece Knife Set with Block (Kitchen)
I bought this Sabatier 15- piece knife set because it was the best "bang for my buck." I have a four-month old daughter, so my husband and I can't afford much. But I'm learning to cook things more intriguing than mac 'n cheese, and I really needed to replace my horrible Farberware knife set.
The knives cut very well through tomatoes and bellpeppers on the first try, and clean very nicely- just don't abuse them and put them in the dishwasher. The low price tag doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated like a top-of-the-line set!
Yes, this set IS made in China. No, it is not Sabatier's finest line of knives. But the set came to me surprisingly sharp, and they feel much more comfortable to use than any other knives I've used- and I have used Henckels before. And this is a HUGE improvement over less expensive knife sets out on the market now... in fact, I think I paid more for the Farberware set, and that only lasted me 4 years of very infrequent use. Perhaps this set won't last me a lifetime, but I certainly can see using these for many years to come.
If it really matters to you where your knives are made, then pass this set up. If you're a professional chef who can afford the Provence line by Sabatier, go for that instead. But if you're like most people, and you need a good quality knife set without spending hundreds of dollars for it, and can see quality even when it is made in China, this is a purchase you won't regret. The "made in China" label does not automatically mean poor quality. It just means it's not made in France.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Real McCoy, August 20, 2001

I own them, use them and enjoy them...however I was not happy that the knife set they advertise as Sabatier (which is French cutlery) is made in China which is not the case with the other more expensive knives I received as a wedding gift. ....

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price, January 10, 2002

This review is from: Sabatier Precision 15-Piece Knife Set with Block (Kitchen)
When I purchased these knives and then realized they were made in China not in France like the rest of the line- I was concerned. However when I got them, they seemed very well made and after using them for a month - the only problem I have is that when I wash them-- they are so sharp I keep cutting myself. For a whole set for the price that they charged I am honestly amazed. It seems Sabatier has enforced a set of standards that were adhered to. I bought a sharpening stone and sharpened the first knife when it got a little dull and it took a edge very well(I am not an expert in this area). I can cut Roast Beef paper thin and can cut paper thin tomato slices-- those are my tests for a knife. I do want to buy 1 top of the line Wustof just for comparison purposes(Will spend around 100 dollars). I have to believe that the majority of cooks will be happy with this set. Compared to another set made in China that I bought at an overstock store -- there is no comparison. These weigh 3 times as much, feel better and take an edge so much better(the bargain set will end up in my toolbox). The edge of these knives compared to my "Buck" hunting knives is very favorable. Would like to hear more comparisons to the other top brands of Chef's knives from people that have both.
Do they hold an edge longer, are they easier to sharpen or do they feel better in the hand?
In summary most people will be happy with them and would be happy to receive as a gift.(if only you could hide the made in China- I guess not everything made in China is junk!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Home Chef, August 2, 2001

I purchased this set because of the Sabatier name, and once again I was over-impressed by the quality it delivered. This set does it all from the hard jobs of carving a 25lb top sirloin roast into perfect steaks to cutting the delicate tomato without crushing it. The bread knife is stellar for those of us who like to make our own bread at home and the steak knives are great for large dinner groups, (six knives instead of the usual four with most sets in this price range). All the knives have an excellent ergonomic friendly design for people like me who put in long hours in our kitchen for the relaxing stress relief of creating fine cullinary works of art. I encourage all chefs, (especially novice chefs), to buy this set. I am positive you will be happily surprized at the quality you get for the price.

Made in China versions of the venerable french cooking knives. Not completely useless, the toothy utility knives are great for steak, and I use the boning/filet knife from time to time, but this was not what I expected-- the deep discount led me to believe the set was of higher quality. The price is low, but you get what you pay for!
