5.0 out of 5 stars This was a funny, heartwarming, and just plain awsome video!, August 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Saber Marionette J 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I first saw this video in a catalogue and thought it looked rather interesting. It wasn't until a year later that I managed to find a less expensive copy which I immeidatley bought. As I watched I became more and more interested in what was going to happen next. That is something that in my opinion is a must when watching a video. Lime is by far the cutest girl (and the funiest) in any anime I've seen yet. Otaru is a truly awkward hero which makes him an extrodinary person to take care of the marionettes. All of the characters so far have been so radicall different that it's almost too good to be true. This is a truly remarkable anime which deserves every bit of recognition it gets. It ranks up there with the likes of Tenchi Muyo! Even some of the voice actors in Tenchi do the voices in Saber Marionette J, so I was even more excited to get to the next vol. I haven't yet, but I hope to soon. All in all, it's a worthy video to buy, you won't be wasting your time or money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just when you thought the future couldn't get any weirder..., April 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Saber Marionette J 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I'll be honest. I haven't actually seen this tape, but through later episodes that I HAVE seen, I know all about it. (Not to mention the fact that I just bought it and will have watched it within the day.)

For 300 years, the Earth colony of Terra 2 has been populated only by men, survived by cloning. The men are either "half-breeds", mixed clones, or "originals", exact duplicates of the original six colonists. The only women are merely lifelike, but emotionless robots called Marionettes. Status quo.

But that is about to change when a young boy named Otaru stumbles upon an antiquated, but very unique Marionette named Lime. Built with a device called a Maiden (or Virgin, depending on the translation) Cicuit, she is the only known Marionette with emotions. And believe me, does she use them!

And there are more of them, too. Cherry, another Maiden Circuit-enhanced Marionette, is recovered next, and things just snowball from there...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Anime to come along in years, June 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Saber Marionette J 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In a far, forgotton corner of the galaxy lies a planet called "Terra 2". 300 years ago, a planet colonizing ship sent from earth, the Mesopatamia, had a malfunction and the crew was forced to make a landing on the planet. The survivors of the crash are all male. Being Top scientists, they figure that the only way to keep their race alive is through cloning. Unfortunately, no matter how hard they try, they cannot make females. All the inhabitants are random genetic clones, or "half breeds", where as the leaders of the countries are all "originals", being that they are exact clones of the original 6 with all there memories.

The descendents of these 6 men built 6 city states on Terra 2: Japones (Japan-like), Germania (Germany-like, also called Gartland), Petelburg (Russia-like), Seian (or Xi-An, China-like), New Texas (U.S.-like) and Romana (Rome-like?)

No women exist on Terra 2, and in there place there were created lifelike, emotionless androids called marionettes. Though they look like women, they are just automatons, used for labor. The story revolves around on boy, named Otaru. He is made fun of by many because he treats Marrionettes like real people.

Then, one day, he accidentaly unseals a marionette hidden under a museum in a cryogenic tube. This marrionette is Lime, and she acts just like a real human girl(if a bit on the zany side!). She has real emotions and feelings, just like a human, but she is also super powered, able to lift even buildings! Otaru also unseals 2 other special marrionettes, Cherry and Bloodberry, each with their own quirks and powers.

Bloodberry is the most aggressive, angerwise and sexual wise. Cherry is very modest being an awesome cooks as well as a hopeless romantic. lime i would liken much to a puppy who is extremely loyal. While being the youngest and silliest acting of the 3, she is the most easily hurt (emotionally that is).

Follow Otaru and his 3 special marionettes as he tries to find out the secret of the 3 marionettes, a secret that involves the fate of terra 2 itself, as well as a plot going back to the original 6 men! This Show is great, because besides the plot, you have otaru just trying to live day to day. Episodes include everything government plots, Mad Marrionette otaku, the hardships of getting a job, to what is cherry making for dinner! Truly a jem in the anime world. It features the Voice talents of Megumi Hayashibara, a very well know singer and voice actress from shows like Super catgirl nuku nuku, Slayers, and many more. Easily worth your time and money. Enjoy -Chris Dryden

5.0 out of 5 stars A great comedy series, April 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Saber Marionette J 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a great series that, sadly, has not gotten the attention it deserves in the US. The setting is a distant planet where a ship crash landed with only 6 survivors, all male. The current inhabitants are all male as well and cloned from the original six. In place of women are robotic 'Marionettes', emotionless workers. The plot revolves around Otaru, who accidently awakens some marionettes who seem to have a full range of emotions. The marionette 'Lime' is one of the great anime characters to come along recently. This series has great writing, great acting and great music. Even if you don't like subs you owe it to yourself to check out this one. Hopefully the other series 'R' and 'J to X' will be released in the US soon as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Made Animes Ever!, July 18, 2002

This review is from: Saber Marionette J 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I'd never watched to WHS version of Saber Marionette but when I was in Hong Kong during my summer travel, one Cantonese TV channel call TVB aired Saber Marionette J to X in Cantonese; with the beginning and ending in Japanese (the songs and stuff). This is the BEST anime show that I had ever encountered while watch TV. No other animes that I had watched before did interast me as much as SMJ. I would recommend it very much to people that like Japanese Anime!!!
