Play the Right Cymbals

Every cymbal has its strengths and limitations. Hitting a smaller or thinner cymbal harder and harder to get a bigger sound or make it louder isn't the answer. It wasn't designed to be so loud. So don't use small, thin cymbals for high-volume, hard-hitting playing (unless you want a contrast in your set-up... but don't hit them as hard as the rest.) For volume, power and durability, choose bigger and heavier models. And consider the brighter sounding series, like AA, AAX, PRO and Sonix. Their sounds are higher pitched and more effective at cutting through a loud band. Lower pitched series, like Hand Hammered and HHX, also offer models suitable for powering any style of music.

I bought these about 3 years ago, and I've loved them ever since. I've seen the standard AA series sabian hi hats on many profession drummers sets. I use them for every genre.. from punk, to pop and jazz.. even some latin and country... etc..etc..

next to that, GREAT in studio hats. they require a tad bit of eqing but man.. they got some real presence to em.

for a good all around set of hi hats, these are great. I plan on sticking with the sabian AA series for years too come.

These are the hi-hats that I use. Now I'm a rock drummer, and I really like to slam into my rock crash and heavy ride, but when I tried the AA rock hats and even the metal hats I found that with both I couldn't get them to break up when I hit them with my foot off the pedal the way the medium hats break up. I get a real nice wash with the medium hats, and I just can't get that with the thicker hats. When collapsed (pedal depressed), there is a nice chick sound, maybe not as penetrating as the rock or metal hats, but I'd be pressed to be able to tell the difference. The real difference is with the wash, which is well-defined and easy to achieve on the medium hats.

The bottom line is personal preference, but try to try out the various hats before you make a decision. I was surprised that the rock hats were not, in fact, the hats that I wanted, as I've tried a medium crash and ride before and found they broke up TOO easily. So your personal playing style will dictate what works best for you, but I'd venture to say these are the more commonly used of the Sabian AA hi-hat line. Have fun!
