5.0 out of 5 stars Sabiston review
I've used all the other major textbooks for Surgery (Schwartz, Greenfield) and Sabiston is by far my favorite. It has the best mix of basic science and clinical info of the three. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Textbook - Use with the Clinical Review of Surgery, June 18, 2008
This review is from: Sabiston Textbook of Surgery: Expert Consult Premium Edition: Enhanced Online Features and Print, 18e (Sabiston Textbook of Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Practicsurgical Practice) (Hardcover)
This is an outstanding surgery review text. When used in conjunction with a solid review textbook that breaks these topics down, your reading is highly focused and relevant with increased retention. I use the Clinical Review of Surgery and the two work well as a combination. FYI, very FAST shipping with Amazon - got the book the next day!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best core surgical textbook currently, November 24, 2009
This review is from: Sabiston Textbook of Surgery: Expert Consult Premium Edition: Enhanced Online Features and Print, 18e (Sabiston Textbook of Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Practicsurgical Practice) (Hardcover)
Better than Greenfield and Schwartz. Of course has the pitfalls of most textbooks with out of date references, but not much to do about that. Good outline of physiology and pathophys of diseases and has a decent, not great, description of procedures. The changes they made from previous editions were good ones, making this the best core book available.

Wonderful edition. vascular surgery section very well written. I love this book. Must for every surgical resident. New edition has expertconsult on line access. You can access from any where. I would recommend editors to make smartphone/PDA/ POCKET PC version of this great resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars great book for exams but outdated., July 5, 2011

Great book for passing your exams, period, but once you'r a PGY4 you would need much more in front of your peers and staff.

1-Format: typical residency level textbook with lots of chapters grouped into sections. Starts with very very general principles which includes a couple of chapters with very limited real benefit, but no harm done.

2-Content: Nearly as comprehensive as you can get, well written, good balanced coverage. some topics would have benefited from more but the majority are OK.

However nearly 50% of the content is outdated already, specially the oncology management sections, I was constantly skipping those here to other resources (Cancer Care Ontario, NCCN, Australian-Newzealand Melanoma guidelines, to name a few).

Operative details can be limited sometimes so you will need a dedicated OR atlas (Zollinger for example)

3-Figures: mostly are very informative.

Good luck.
