Smokin' salsa and son from a sadly underrated master sonero.,

Angel Canales was and remains an enigmatic and controversial figuire in 1970s salsa. He was very flashy, flamboyant and outrageous on stage but was also a tireless fighter for artists' rights. Rumour has it that he became so disillusioned with the music industry that he threw all of his music into the ocean (allegedly). This album was one of his best releases and showcases his formidable improvisational skills. The only track worth skipping on this otherwise superb album is his truly mediocre cover of the classic bolero "La Hiedra" (Canales was a great sonero but not a good bolero singer). Originally released in 1975 and produced by Joe Cain.

One Hit Wonder Hit a Home Run,

This is one of my top 5 records in my salsa collection.Every element in this record is solid: songwriting, instrumentation and arrangement, and vocals. Canales' phrasing and range are outstanding. Perhaps the only comparison is Daniel Santos, although Canales has the better voice. The music is salsa gorda at its best, and it's hard to think that this band did not go on to greater glory. Every single song is a gem, tightly written, melodic and rhythmically precise. That Angel Canales would come out with this masterful record, and then basically disappear, is beyond me. (He put out a much inferior second LP, then a spottily-recorded live record.)

Diferente,
