Salsa Picante!,
By El Caballo Blanco (Arlington, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saboreando Salsa Dur En El Bronx (Audio CD)
Wayne Gorbea & Salsa Picante do a magnificant job in this album. If you are a die hard salsa fanatico, then you will not be disappointed with this disco. All the tracks are impressive! The last track "Estamos Chao" has to be one of the best arranged salsa songs I've have ever heard, and I've heard them all. Can't wait for the next release.

In my Salsa top 3. Great dancing and listening.,

One of the very best. Favorite 'El Yo Yo' gets me in salsa trance each time. It has a relentless and pulsing rythm that gets you going, keeps you going and still has great breaks and solo's. (Also the track that my salsa teacher used to make us feel what was harder when we were beginners.)Usually songs are better for dancing or for listening. This album stragely enough however is one of the fewer salsa albums I also listen too without dancing. And something else for the salseros: I dance on 1, but 'Son Picante' makes dancing on the 2 very obvious. (Then again, salsa was born in New York, and they dance on the 2 there.) I cannot recommend this enough. You can buy this eyes closed.

Bronx Salsa At it's Best!!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Saboreando Salsa Dur En El Bronx (Audio CD)
You will be hard pressed to find a better salsa cd without going back into the 70's or 80's. Salsa Dura at its best. The band is tight, the arrangements top notch and lead vocals crisp. A homerun no need to hit the skip button for this cd just press play and dance. The 2 best tracks are the first and last with everything in the middle filled with some dancefloor ready cuts. This is made for the clubs, djs, collectors and anyone who knows their salsa!!!!!!

Old School,

This is the type of Salsa that say's, if you can't hang, don't even think of putting your foot on the floor, cause it makes you step, move, swing the hips and turn till you drop. It's Salsa of the old school, you could also just sit and listen but I dare you to stay still.

I play this CD non-stop. One of my favorite salsa CDs. I never tire of listening to it. If you like Sonora Carruseles and Jose Alberto (as do I), chances are you'll like this....

Wayne Gorbea's new CD is a scorcher. I would have to reccomend it as a must buy...great for dancing/listening the whole way through. My only complaint is that the album becomes a bit repetitive.

Wayne Gorbea continues to give Dancers another outstanding CD. His music will have you moving from beginning to end. If you didn't get his first CD, then I recommend this one. You will not be disappointed.

A trip back to the Salsa 70's,
By Frank (NY United States) - See all my reviews

It's generally agreed that "Salsa" today rarely measures up to that from the great pre-80's era. Although this CD isn't quite in the same league as the Fania All-Stars, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barreto, Willie Colon et al, it does capture much of the feel of the NY Latin sound of the 60's and 70's. (Later Edit: After living with this CD for awhile, I've changed my mind and upgraded it to being well within this league.)
The arrangements, in particular, are excellent. They contain many quotes from vintage pieces, such as Puente's Ran Kan Kan in the first track. They reflect a command of the Salsa musical dialect, including the use of rhythm changes to keep the interest flowing as well as the insertion of Latin percussion solos where the music "demands" it. (Strangely, the liner notes indicate that these solos were overdubbed (?!)) In certain respects, I prefer it to Jimmy Bosch's most recent CD (El Avión de la Salsa) because it's less refined and has more of an extemporaneous feel to it in contrast to the more tightly arranged Bosch output. This is my first Gorbea CD. I will likely now gobble up the rest of his output as I have with Jimmy Bosch. |
