Book Description

Sabre is the graphic novel that made comics history! Reviewed in Dec. 1998 by J.C. Vaughn, OVERSTREET's FAN Universe: "Sabre is not only important historically for its groundbreaking place in the early chronicles of the graphic novel, it is a gut-wrenching, provocative, free-thinking piece of fiction. Like his work on KILLRAVEN, BLACK PANTHER, and NATHANIEL DUSK, Don McGregor not only delivers, he delivers in spades. What's more, he challenges his readers! This anniversary edition gives us all a chance to take the thrill ride again. Take the plunge. SABRE rocks."

Sabre is an illustrated heroic fantasy, intense passionate love story, and in your face social commentary.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"(In SABRE), Don McGregor created a series like nothing else on the stands in the 1970s." -- COMIC WIRE, Beau Yarbrough

"(Sabre) is a strange combination of street fighter rebel and romantic idealist: James Dean with a cause in a Wonderland Nightmare...A beautifully illustrated book, the fine quality printing highlighting Paul Gulacy's crisp and magnetic black-and-white style. The story is pure, unbridled McGregor...one of the few surviving believers in independent thought and action." -- Howard Zimmerman, ROCK SCENE

"A controversial milestone in comics history." -- MEDIASCENE

"One of the finest comic book stories to come out of 1977...damn fine entertainment." -- Edward Via, THE COMICS JOURNAL

5.0 out of 5 stars Don McGregor's SABRE set my hair on fire!, March 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sabre (Paperback)
Finally! Don McGregor's work has for far too long been sequestered in the comic shops of America, and now, at long last, it is free to rampage right off the shelves (both real and on-line) and into the hearts of readers everywhere. I read SABRE when it first came out in 1977 and this new edition carries the same OMPH! impact as the original did. McGregor is an incredible advocate for his characters, no matter who or what his characters might be. Straight, gay, don't know, don't care, human, alien, stand-up guy or rat, all of his characters ring true. This can be said of all his work from period piece detective dramas to world-shaking science fiction conflicts, and it's particularly true of this one. SABRE is one of the first graphic novels produced in the USA, and it's still one of the finest. If you're open the experience, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly entertaining, wild comic., August 8, 1999
This review is from: Sabre (Paperback)
Sabre is one of the wildest comics I've ever read. Art and Story are both superb.

Sabre is like "Master of Kung Fu" (naturally since Paul Gulacy did that too), "Black Panther", "Punisher" and even "Sin City" rolled into one. Intellegent, beautiful, thoughtful and fast. It's a unique comic.
