I tested this unit, and it sprays a liquid stream (I wasn't sure if it was a cone, a cloud, etc. so there you go). Have not had to use it for its intended purpose yet. I carry one with me every day, along with folding knife, light, etc. It helps to have multiple options wherever you go, particularly in the "pistol free" zones where sidearms are prohibited. Unfortunately those intent on committing crimes don't really care about such prohibitions, thus those areas have a higher likelihood of innocent people being fired on, as evidenced in a variety of news stories at colleges, supermarkets, churches, etc.

Pepper spray is also handy to have on hand to deter wild animals and dogs. If you spray an angry dog in the face, or put the canister near it to smell, impairing the dog is an option versus just shooting, stabbing, or kicking/stomping it in the ribs/neck/groin/etc. So it is nice to have a variety of tools with you, in addition to your body and your brain.

It is handy to have multiple canisters so you can keep one in the coat, in the nightstand, by the door, in the car, etc. Of course a firearm would be superior whenever possible and accessible. That may sound paranoid but violence can be random, and often is unforeseen until it happens. The Boy Scouts say "be prepared" for a reason.

I haven't had to use it yet. I prefer the type that shoots a stream...I honestly haven't checked to see! Either way, it's not much larger than a regular bic type lighter and I'm sure it'll work fine.
