The enclosure comes with a back plane with a small circuit board attached, 2 screws, a screw driver, 2 plastic guides, and a USB 3.0 cable. When I opened my box, the circuit board was attached to the back plane but askew. It's easy to remove the circuit board and re-seat it, so I did, gently. The board clicks into place in 2 out of 3 places, but the middle snap can never be made secure; not without a Dremel tool. The result is that the power and USB ports are not flush with the back plane. Further, for the drive to slide into the enclosure properly, you have to push the 2 guides into the the 2 screw holes on each side of the drive. But the small plastic posts on the guides are too big for those holes. They'll go in but not nearly far enough, resulting in a drive/guide combo that will never fit inside the enclosure. You could drop the drive in without the guides, but then it rattles around touching the walls. I have no idea how the product got past inspectors but I find it hard to believe that I got the rare bad one. These are manufacturing issues. At any rate, I returned it. Thank you, Amazon!

I bought this enclosure in combination with a WD Blue 1 TB Desktop Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, 7200 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache - WD10EZEX, so I could use it with the Dish-TV VIP211K satellite receiver in my motorhome. The combination of those two items from Amazon ($87.18) cost between $10 and $50 less than similar offerings on Dish-TV's Website. According to Dish-TV, a 1TB hard drive will record 120 hours of video, but they don't say if it'll record that many hours in HD.

Installing the hard drive was simple enough. The hard drive plugs into the enclosure's end-cap and two small screws secure the end cap to the enclosure. A tiny Philips screwdriver is even provided in the package. Total installation time took me no more than three minutes. I bought this particular enclosure because it supports USB 3.0, is backward compatible to earlier USB protocols and includes the USB cable. It has its own power supply and a convenient button-operated power switch. Even when the hard drive is working hard the enclosure gets only moderately warm.

After I plugged this hard drive into the satellite receiver's USB port and turned it on, then had Dish-TV activate the hard drive which costs $40, it took about five minutes to format this hard drive. Completing this installation, I've been able to automatically record movies from my satellite receiver and then play them back at a time when it is convenient for me to watch.

In this DVR application, I could not ask for better performance. The recordings are as clear and sharp as the original programming and play without pauses, stuttering or glitches. Compared with buying a hard drive that is already in a housing with a power supply, this combination costs less, added little to my installation time, provides flawless performance and doesn't waste space.

Pros:

USB 3.0 for fast transfer rates

Cons:

Very poor quality design and hardware.

So first, upon receipt the circuit board was disconnected from the back cover. Not a big problem, until I tried to reconnect it. The circuit board would connect to the back cover but not lock in completely. It is easily detached when either the HDD or cables are moved, which is often. Next, the HDD must be slid into the unit with two plastic tabs (included) attached to either side. Unfortunately, the included directions do not tell you this so you must figure out what the two random pieces of plastic are for and how to attach them properly. They each have a plastic tip that is inserted where the HDD screws usually go. Once again, this must be learned on your own as there are no instructions describing this. Also, the plastic tips are larger than the HDD screw holes so you must push them in very hard to get the tabs connected. I broke one of the plastic tips in this process because it was just far too large to fit in the screw hole. Once the tabs are connected and you manage to get the circuit board attached to the back cover, you can insert the HDD and screw on the back cover. They made the enclosure very tight fitting, which is usually good but not in this case. Because the front and rear cover screws are far from the center, when the HDD is inserted the center of each cover bows out because of the interior components pushing against it. Lastly, the included stand does not attach in any way and the enclosure can easily slide or fall off.

So all in all, the enclosure design is absolutely horrible and a very low quality design. Still, I decided to give this enclosure three stars because the USB 3.

Out of the box the connections seemed pretty flimsy, and the electronics are soldered to the board crooked. Included in the box are two plastic pieces which weren't mentioned in the "manual". Turns out they attach to the sides of the drive by the side screw holes to make the drive slide into the enclosure snugly. This keeps the drive from rattling around and breaking the connections.

So, I put a drive in and plugged the enclosure into a usb 3.0 port on my Windows 8.1 laptop and it wouldn't mount. Before deciding it was defective I tried it in a usb 2.0 port and it mounted fine. Then I updated my usb 3.0 controller (in Device Manager), making it work fine in the usb 3.0 port. A little weird considering my other usb 3.0 drives work fine with the (apparently) outdated driver, so that might point to problems with some people's systems if their latest driver isn't compatible for some reason.

Another peeve, it uses the least common of the usb 3.0 plug geometries which is annoying.

As for positives, it's a drive enclosure... It encloses the drive and connects it via usb 3.0, so I guess it performs as advertised. One blue LED which actually blinks when something is happening, which is better than can be said for a lot of these cheep enclosures I've bought.

Recommendable for backup and occasional access, but buy something more robust if you'll be using it frequently.
