I rarely write reviews unless under one of two conditions - the product excels, or the product sucks. This is a case of excels. For the price, for the simplicity, and for the operation I completely recommend the Sabrent ECS-STU35K Hard Drive Enclosure Case. There are almost no instructions because if you know the difference between connectors, screws, and screwdrivers you don't need them. The only tool you need, a small Phillips Head screwdriver is even included in the package.

Setup was simplicity defined. Remove the top 4 thumb screws, plug in the appropriate adapter to your IDE or SATA drive, plug in the 4-pin power connector to the IDE or SATA drive, place it into the Case and replace the cover. For added stability of the drive inside the case, the bottom of the ECS-STU35K Case has four slots matching to the holes in the bottom of your hard drive. Using the screwdriver included in the box, seat the hard drive solidly with the four screws ALSO included in the package. Plug in power, plug in the USB 2.0 to your PC or MAC, turn on the power switch at the back of the case, and you get immediate recognition of the drive.

I had an old 120Gb IDE drive that I discovered was actually broken, through no fault of the Case. I had another 160Gb SATA drive from an old Gateway tower. I recovered long forgotten sound recordings, several pictures with "lost" backups, and other documents from unemployment days. After moving all these to my PC, I reformatted the old SATA drive with no problems.

My ONLY recommendation to Sabrent is to provide an updated model with USB 3.0 drive capability to improve speed.

I read reviews and specs of many other Hard Drive cases. The Sabrent ECS-STU35K Case had only one review (5 stars) when I purchased this. Hopefully this review will help you with your own decision.

I have rated this device as five stars because it works well, is sturdy, has plenty of air vents and fully constructed of aluminum for heat dissipation. The connections are great allowing older and newer hard drives to be accessed! One bit of advice though, just take the top four screws out and not the bottom screws also because all the sides will come apart. There are four sides, a top and a bottom that are all independent pieces from each other that are held together with the screws. I'm enjoying my purchase and I'm sure you will too! It's a great way to clone your old hard drive to a new one or to just add easy hard drive space.

This enclosure does what it is supposed to do and seems to work well. It is cheaply made, thus contributing to a few short cuts that I can't fault the manufacturer on (it is, after all, meant to be a cheap enclosure). The case itself is a bit long and simply made. The top and bottom are flat plates of medium weight brushed aluminum that attach via large thumb screws at the corners and flex when pressed. There are no mounting rails for the hard drive; it just screws to the bottom plate with flat head screws that attach through holes in the plate. There is no shock or vibration protection for the drive. The "feet" for the enclosure are just the thumb screws that hold the bottom plate on, and unless you can find some rubber feet for them, they transmit some vibration and noise to the surface that the enclosure rests on. You could conceivably place the enclosure vertically on its side, but there is nothing provided to keep it from falling over. The sides are lightweight stamped metal that can fall out when the top or bottom of the enclosure is removed. They flex very easily, but I don't perceive that to be a big problem. However, because they fit loosely into the slots that hold them in place, there is more vibration noise from this unit that I typically see. I may try to find some thin rubber spacers that I can put on the sides to see if I can't dampen the noise a bit. There is about half an inch clearance on the front and sides of the hard drive inside the case. The circuit board at the back has logic and power connectors for both IDE and SATA drives. It is attached to the bottom plate of the case with a couple of short stand-offs. There are separate connectors on the back for USB 2.0 and e-SATA.Read more ›

I've been using this for about 2 weeks, for creating an external storage at home.
It works perfectly without any issues at all.
It comes with USB and e-sata cables, which saves you the need to buy such cables.
I'm using it with e-sata cable to my laptop, so the read/write rates are much faster.
would recommend this!

If you have leftover hard drives that are worthwhile keeping or otherwise need to mount for erasing or simply to back up files, consider buying an enclosure like the Sabrent ECS-STU35K. This unit supports 3.5" desktop drives and is equipped with IDE and SATA interfaces and includes a USB cable. It also includes screws for securing the drive to the case plus a small Philips screwdriver. Setup takes about 5 minutes. The internal IDE interface aligns perfectly with Seagate drives (my favorite brand) as does the power source. It has a power-on switch on the front (or back, depending on how you face it) and is recognized immediately on boot. I have not tried powering it after PC booting. Windows 7 sees the drive. I haven't tried it with Linux yet, but I suspect it should mount fine as well. Hope this helps your buying decision.
