It was easy to set up and has worked great so far.
JAMES DECARO
Once mounted, I found the front cover would not allow the DVD Burner to open, the sides were too narrow.
Jim
One runs with a little more fan noise than the other, but not overly intrusive.

I stuck my neck out a little when I ordered the Sabrent enclosure. Some of the user reviews fussed about a loud fan or problems with screws, etc. After reading those, when I opened the package from Amazon I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice looking unit with a little heft to it and case that looked well made.

I slipped in a good Plextor DVD burner that I had salvaged from a computer I had just scrapped, screwed the face plate on the enclosure and plugged in two cables and the power adapter and hooked it up to a USB port on my Asus eeePC netbook.

It immediately read a CD and then played a DVD movie without any problems and with no further tinkering and without needing the tiny "user manual" leaflet that came in the package. Drivers included on a mini-CD are for Windows 98SE and are not needed with Windows 2000/ME/XP.

Fan noise? In the unit I received it was virtually non-existent. Since the unit cost just enough to qualify for Amazon's Super Saver shipping, I paid no shipping charges. I'm extremely pleased with both the price and the value of this drive. I don't expect it to have hard use, and I won't travel with it, so I see no reason why I shouldn't be using it for a long time. A good cheap drive, a good cheap little baby computer -- good deal.

The enclosure appears to be very well made for its price. Assembly using a DVD burner salvaged from a Mac was trouble-free. The new drive required no setup when connected to an ASUS EEE PC 904HA running Windows XP. The drive is also recognized when connected to our newer Mac. The fan noise is comparable to other external enclosures I have used, louder than some premium units, but much quieter than most budget models.

The cable connections are not secure enough to recommend this enclosure for portable use, but it is great for home use with a Netbook.

I bought two of these to hold my Plextor DVD recorders for occasional DVD cutting. They work perfectly with Windows and Linux. The fan is a bit noisy, but not too bad. It's nice to be able to disconnect the drive from the computer and switch it off when I'm not using it. DVD drives tend to fill up with dust when they sit in a computer case all day with the fans running. 8x DVD+Rs cut at full speed without problems over USB 2.0. I haven't tried anything faster yet.

I was de-commissioning my XP machine and thought I'd remove the optical drive and install it in my new build, as it's a LightScribe drive which is no longer being made (but I still have many blank LightScribe discs). But as I pulled it out I realized it has an IDE interface and the new machine is only SATA. What to do? This enclosure is the perfect answer.
The fan is a little noisy, and the enclosure is large (to accommodate a hefty drive) and the filled unit is heavy.
But it is well made, with great fit/finish, and works very well. It has an on-off switch, LED power indicator, and USB 2.0 is fast enough for optical transfers, as the speed is controlled by the limits of the drive.
I have had reason to use it a few times already and it works as advertised. No complaint (the fan just reminds you to turn it off when finished). I am lucky to have found one still hanging around.

A fantastic price, but poor quality - fan was stuck - I had to push it, now it buzzes loudly and vibrates the whole case. I would replace the fan, but it is MELTED IN. Fan opening is 2 small slits, one blocked by the fan. Works ok with DVD drive.
~~works with a hard drive - it is fast, 27M/s, but without SMART support (smartctl from smartmontools/linux) it is risky -
no warning of overheating if fan were to quit,
no warning if drive were getting flaky,
AFAIK you can't shut down the drive before you turn off power - this is said to reduce drive life if done often.
For HD you need side mounting brackets.

The item was missing parts and the input/output panel was broken. Was able to use with the case open. Disappointed.

This is a well-built enclosure and works just as advertised. I see some reviewers remarked that the front bezel opening was not the correct size. Wrong! They installed it upside down. The front opening size is fine. This thing just plain works as advertised.
