While the Zap Mama a capella style is interesting, relatively unique, and enjoyable, Sabsylma is rather similar to Zap Mama's first efforts (Adventures in Afropea). If one likes Afropea, one would find Sabsylma enjoyable, as well.

Zap Mama - Sabsylma (1994)An extremely creative band tries to get grounded and connect with hit-and-miss results. Not my favorite Zap Mama album, but the roots that would eventually yield genius are evident here. For me, the chief selling points on SABSYLMA are the two or so choice cuts that show off their dazzling, rapid-speed word play vocals. In time they went on to hone their chops and make mind-blowingly great and original pop music as Marie Daulne stepped up into the main songwriting and leadership role. If you're a fan, you'll appreciate having this but probably won't put it on nearly as much as SEVEN or A MA ZONE unless you prefer the older stuff which is earthier, more authentically African with more of a focus on sweet harmonies. The group has evolved quite a bit over time and SABSYLMA is a transitional album. I would think most of their fans favor their later work which is far more hip and with more mainstream appeal, despite the fact that they're anything but mainstream. At least that's how I see it - and I'm definitely a fan!
