Brutal and melodic... I f***in' love this s**t!, February 26, 2007
This review is from: Sacrament EP (Audio CD)
Lately I've been getting into the harsher side of Industrial/EBM and Unter Null (aka Erica Dunham) is my latest obsession. I absolutely thrive off the pulsating dance beats and just love the brutality of her voice and words, which is really more like aggressive poetry rather than screaming incoherently - making 'Sacrament' - part 1 of a twin EP concept - more appealing and accessible with its melodic abrasiveness.
Track listing goes as follows:
1. Prophecy
2. This Is Your End
3. Watch You Die
4. Playing The Fool
5. Endtime (INURE mix)
6. Disgrace (unholy remix by ADAM)
7. This Is Your End (T3CHNOPHOBIA mix)
8. Prophecy (BLANK mix)

I liked the first album, the Failure Epiphany a whole lot. But the songs on this CD don't really add up to much. The first four tracks suffer from the same problems-- they seem half-cooked. There are ideas for beats, hints of melody, and throughout, murky, unfocused vocals bubble up with a word here or there "distrust" "you lie" "you die" etc., but the songs never really cohere enough to make a strong impression. The mixing doesn't help, as everything sounds very muddled.
The beats seem as if they have potential, but they aren't fully realized. The melodies are really quite lacking. The songs are like a mush of sounds, all of which are intriguing, but you can't really get a feel for any particular beat or melody as it is either not distinct enough to be heard over the general burble of sound, or else it slips away, submerged by some other layer of noise.
The lyrics are particularly bad. They feel very random, mere sketches or concepts that never got fleshed out. They seem to be collections of random bad feelings about someone who has done the singer wrong, who she'll be happy to see die or suffer in some way. The problem is there is no real structure. Sometimes there's rhyming, but many times not. Other songs consist of words or phrases that just bubble up at random from the din, not connected to each other at all. There are no choruses, just lines. The other problem is the lack of subtlety or metaphor. All the lyrics are very pedestrian and boring, simple statements or single words that don't carry much meaning or resonance. Now, unsubtle lyrics can be great, and on Failure Epiphany, they worked due to the absolute vehemence with which they were delivered, and they were also set perfectly to punchy music. But in this case, where the music is more subdued and murky, the unsubtle lyrics don't make much of an impression at all, except the impression that the writer either lacks any musical skill, or just didn't care to put the effort in.
The remixes are a lot better than the original songs-- the mixers have wisely sifted through the murk and pulled out the beats and melodies that are only hinted at in the originals, and created songs with more oomph and drive. Unfortunately, they can't help the vocals, which still condemn these songs to being completely forgettable.
I like the Unter Null style. There's a lot of potential with it, but this recording is quite mediocre.

I am newbie to Unter Null's music. I discovered Erica Dunham's main music project on the internet last year. Her brand of EBM is both abrasive and melodic similiar to Suicide Commando and Amduscia. Erica's vocals is a mix of distorted and clean. I finally bought my first Unter Null cd not too long ago. It is "Sacrament", one half of a two part EP set (the other is "Absolution"). "Sacrament" is a half hour long set of killer dance beats and harsh distorted vocals. The crisp synthesized dance beats are upbeat and highly energetic. The one song I find myself hitting the repeat button on my stereo is "This is Your End" (T3chnophobia Mix). The beats are bouncy and energetic and the melody is addictive. Don't get me wrong, all of the songs on the EP is awesome but "This is Your End" is the one song that really stood out for me. After listening to "Sacrament" several times already tonight, I have already submitted an order for "Absolution" to complete the two cd set.
