Book Description

June 21, 2006
"The Sacred Art of Soul Making" offers an authentic and substantive spirituality for our time, one that leads the reader toward understanding the structure of the soul and its development through meditation, prayer, presence, and other practices. This book addresses the important questions of soul and spirit with the depth and subtlety they require and with the clarity they call for. Joseph Naft presents an integrated spiritual path that begins where we are and ultimately takes us beyond consciousness, toward the abode of the sacred. That sacredness can touch and transform each of us, if we make the necessary, devoted effort. And "The Sacred Art of Soul Making" shows the way toward that potential.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Deep within each of us dwells the source of peace, purpose, and love. Yet we live in the chaotic dissonance of the superficial layers of our hearts and minds. A sea of the most precious spiritual energies surrounds us, inside and out, yet our thirst remains unquenched, our souls malnourished and unformed." (from the Introduction)

Bridging East and West, The Sacred Art of Soul Making addresses the central questions of spiritual practice with the depth and subtlety they require and with unexpected clarity. The book offers several unique features.

First, it addresses people looking for ways to bring Eastern spiritual practices of meditation and presence into relationship with Western religious sensibilities. For example, large numbers of Westerners have found spiritual succor in Buddhist practice, but now realize they also yearn for a personal relationship with the Divine, for the practice of prayer, and openness to conscience. Others find themselves in the reverse situation, with their Western religious experience missing certain essential elements found in Eastern practices like meditation. The Sacred Art of Soul Making speaks to both groups, showing how the inner work of meditation and presence naturally blends with the search for God.

Second, the author presents the hierarchy of inner energies, demonstrates their deep spiritual significance experientially, and teaches methods for transforming energies. Through the completeness of this scale of energies and their related practices, The Sacred Art of Soul Making shows readers how their spiritual work can gradually deepen, even beyond the level of the conscious energy. This matters because a widely-held conceit in the New Age spirituality of our time claims that consciousness itself is the Ultimate, which is not even nearly true.

Third, the book discusses the nature of will, the Divine as will, and the relationship between our individual will and the One Sacred Will.

About the Author

The son of Holocaust survivors, Joseph Naft was born in a Displaced Persons' camp in northern Italy in the aftermath of World War II. That legacy of unspeakable evil engendered his abiding interest in how the seemingly intractable problem of human violence can be resolved. For over thirty-five years, he has studied Buddhist, Sufi, Christian, and Jewish spiritual practices in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Joseph Naft has taught meditation and spiritual practices since 1976.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sacred Art of Soul Making, August 13, 2006
This review is from: The Sacred Art of Soul Making (Paperback)
The Sacred Art of Soul Making is well worth your time and effort. It is clear and easy to read. It will enlighten you as to the different levels of energy, and inform you as to how they apply to you and everyday life. There are valuable practices to keep your awareness focused and clear. I have suggested several dear friends purchase this material. Josheph Naft has done an excellent job of communicating. He has another book called "Agents of Peace" which is a novel. I would suggest purchasing the noval after reading The Art of Soul Making. In this novel, the characters apply some of the paractices mentioned in The Sacred Art of Soul Making. A MUST READ.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Sacred Art of Soul Making" - A Must Read, March 23, 2007
This review is from: The Sacred Art of Soul Making (Paperback)
In a world rampant with small self-importance, precipitated by epidemic narcissism, "The Sacred Art of Soul Making" is a timely intervention. Joseph Naft has written an exceptional, educational read. Culled from his experience with daily spiritual practice, from both the traditional and the esoteric, he has developed a plan for the recovery, maintenance and expression of True Self.

"The Sacred Art of Soul Making" delivers practical, insightful information, pertinent to the continued development of our potential as human beings. This is more than just an inspirational read, it offers step by step methods for the turning of ordinary living, into the extraordinary life. Finally, the alchemy for living deliberately is demystified. What awaits the reader is a message imbued with clarity and a well defined plan, for becoming that which makes the difference.

This is the book, that cracks the code on how to engage deeply, honestly and proficiently with the task of becoming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Map for the Path, August 8, 2006
This review is from: The Sacred Art of Soul Making (Paperback)
If you have read a lot of spiritual books and have felt disappointed - maybe as if something had been left out - try The Sacred Art of Soul Making. Subtitled "Balance and Depth in the Spiritual Practice", this book is the perfect companion for seekers interested in spiritual practice based on timeless wisdom, and incorporating the key elements of mind, body, and spirit. Appropriate for both those just beginning the journey and those with years of study and practice, The Sacred Art of Soul Making provides both the necessary foundation for a strong, multi-faceted spiritual practice and suggestions for accessing increasingly finer and more subtle awareness. The book provides clear instructions and exercises for the seeker to explore, without demanding any particular belief or promoting any self-serving point of view. Topics include energy, the mind, body and heart, and awareness of and union with the ineffable I AM. Joseph Naft's breadth and depth of study and practice are evident in the incorporation of aspects of many spiritual teachings, and in the genuine good-heartedness evident in his writing. Naft offers wisdom with no catches or hidden agendas; and neither oversimplifies nor over-complicates the spiritual journey. His book provides a firm anchor for the serious seeker, always offering the opportunity for new insight while never pointing to a false path.
