Book Description

November 24, 2009

The bones were just the beginning . . .

When American geneticist Charlotte Hennesey examined what she believed were the remains of Jesus, the Vatican buried her discovery. But the DNA Charlotte extracted from the sacred bones and injected into her own body has eliminated every trace of the cancer that was devouring her from within. And it has given her the power to perform medical miracles.

Now wheels have been set in motion that will have cataclysmic consequences for the volatile Middle East and all humankind. A two-thousand-year-old destiny is about to be fulfilled—resulting in the brazen kidnapping of Charlotte Hennesey, and ensnaring Israeli archaeologist Amit Mizrachi and noted Egyptologist Julie LeRoux in an ancient mystery centered around the world's most powerful relic. As zealots plot to rip the Holy Land asunder, the race begins to avert the unthinkable—for the armies gathering to meet on the hills of Meggido can mean only one thing: Armageddon!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Jesus Christ's mortal remains turned up in a secret crypt below Jerusalem's Temple Mount in Byrnes's 2007 debut, The Sacred Bones. Now DNA extracted from those remains cures geneticist Charlotte Hennessy of cancer in this equally outlandish sequel. Assassins track Hennessy to Phoenix, Ariz., where they kill her boss and significant other, Evan Aldrich. Hennessy and her ally, Fr. Patrick Donovan, struggle to survive as they attempt to foil the schemes of a motley assortment of villains in search of the now missing Jesus relics, notably American-born Rabbi Aaron Cohen. Another duo, Israeli archeologist Amit Mizrachi and his romantic interest, Egyptologist Julie LeRoux, also attract Cohen's unwelcome attention. A formulaic plot, which includes abduction and the threat of sexual violence, builds to a denouement that will be familiar to viewers of the first Indiana Jones movie. (Apr.)

From Booklist

Randolph, editor of two anthologies by Nebraska authors, here brings the Sandhills of western Nebraska vividly to life, as experienced by one plucky young woman. Recently married Mary Needham loses a leg in the tragic auto accident that kills her husband. She had been like one of the ranch hands as a girl, and then on her in-laws’ ranch, but now she is lost. Convinced she has nowhere else to turn, she makes a hasty and regrettable decision to marry Ward Hamilton, the conservative preacher who comes calling. She soon realizes her role is merely that of “the church’s servant.” She nearly leaves, but at age 33 and with four children, she stays. She does get a job at a nursing home and, with help from her grandparents, an RN degree, while Ward becomes more and more obsessed with his church, seeing his life as a battle between good and evil. Randolph’s debut novel becomes a page-turner as the reader pulls for Mary to regain her self-esteem and ultimately return to the land she loves. --Deborah Donovan --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as the first, July 14, 2009

Sacred Blood is the sequel to Sacred Bones and I think although it's an interesting premis, it just tries too hard to live up too book 1. A decent read and interesting story line, it helps to have some familiarity with the Western Wall and that whole Dome of the Rock area. Read it, but don't expect Sacred Bones level material

This review is from: The Sacred Blood (Mass Market Paperback)
Not having read the first book, 'The Sacred Bones', I had a little trouble engaging with the characters at first. However, by the middle of the novel, the main characters of Charlotte Hennesey (who's been injected with truly miraculous DNA which cures her cancer), Amit Mizrachi (who discovers an important scroll by none other than Jesus himself) and Rabbi Cohen (who has a plan to usher in a new age -- with the help of Charlotte and a very important big box [no spoilers!]), drew me into the action. The plot is all here: several stories occur simultaneously, leading to a shootout at the Dome of the Rock where most of the major characters converge for a spectacular climax. Author Byrnes does raise some interesting questions about 'resurrection' (body or just spirit) and religious fanaticism, and touches on the volatile situation in Jerusalem, but on the whole, this novel was enjoyable, just not as memorable as I'd like. Perhaps if I had read the first book...

Michael Byrnes does it again! This book was just as riviting as Sacred Bones. I could not put it down until I got to the end. I am hoping there will be a third and then maybe possibly a movie!!!!
