1.0 out of 5 stars Just terrible!
I picked this up for the Jack the Ripper theme and the whole thing was just terrible. I ended up flipping through the second half and reading passages pertinent to the mystery, not the actual romance (blech). The mystery was intriguing at first, but wrapped up very unconvincingly with a murderer out of left field. This was my first (and my last) book by Heather Graham.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Return of Jack the Ripper, July 28, 2011
By
This review is from: Sacred Evil (Krewe of Hunters, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Has Jack the Ripper risen from the grave and continued his reign of terror but this time instead of the East End of London it is the East End of New York. Or has someone researched very meticulously and is now exacting his carefully laid plans to strike fear into the hearts of woman and show the NYPD what fools they are.

Jude Crosby, detective for the NYPD, is baffled by the latest murders and knows they need help solving this case. They seem to be linked and they don't. The only thing in common right now that he can see is that it is all centering around the myth that Jack the Ripper came to America and reincarnated himself into a man named Jonathan Black and became head of the House of Spiritualism, a satanic church, continuing his murder spree. The director of the movie O'Leary believes that because they were filming on the site of the House of Spiritualism it has awakened the spirit of Jack the Ripper.

Whitney Tremont is the first of the Krewe of Hunters to arrive. She is set up in the historic Blair House right next door to where the House of Spiritualism once stood and is partnered with Jude Crosby to help in this investigation. Her background in film helps her with the questioning of the movie crew and her other talents lead to clues that no other investigator would know.

The murders are escalating and every detail is so exact that the killer or killers somehow have inside information and skills that exceed all others. At times it seems that it could very well be someone close to them and Whitney could very well fit the profile of the Ripper's last victim.

Jude and Whitney's affiliation starts out shaky but grows into respect and blossoms into love for each other. Among this budding relationship, New York is under siege from a madman (or ghost?) and the Krewe of Hunters must use all their skills before one of their own is found mutilated like the Ripper's last victim.

Sacred Evil has the history blended with romance and a good ghost story that I love. The third installment of Ms. Graham's Krewe of Hunters series is even better than the first two. At this rate I am guessing that The Evil Inside should be a very intriguing fourth installment of this extraordinary series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed all around with Heather Graham, September 12, 2011
This review is from: Sacred Evil (Krewe of Hunters, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have always loved Heather Grahams paranormal novels but this book was very disappointing! it took me a couple months to finish it because I would have to set it down and read something else. I felt that she put to much into the history of Jack the ripper, and not enough into her main characters. I'm sorry but if I wanted to know every single detail of Jack the ripper I would have gone out and bought and book about him. Now onto the character flaws... you don't get to really know them at all they are thrown together to solve a case they meet he doesn't trust her, they go to a couple autopsies then all of a sudden they sleep together. I mean you learned more about Jack the ripper than you did about Whitney, and Jude! She usually has a villain that is apart of the book through out the whole story, but these guys are in it like a total of three times. You never really get the story of why they did it. I'm just all around disappointed with this book and wish I hadn't spend my money and this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jack the Ripper is Terrorizing Modern Day NYC or is he?, July 27, 2011
By
WendyReads (South Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sacred Evil (Krewe of Hunters, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jack the Ripper is alive and stalking young actresses in Modern Day New York City. This is the premise of Heather Graham's latest Krewe of Hunters novel "Sacred Evil." Virginia Rockford is working as an extra on director Angus Avery's latest film set in the late 1880's New York. Leaving the set late one night she is hunted down and killed by a shadow man in a long black cape and stove top hat. The last person to see her is old Captain Tyler who is a homeless vet. Detective Jude Crosby is on the case hoping to defuse the madness before "The Ripper Strikes in New York City" headlines start appearing because Miss Rockford was killed in the same gruesome manner as the original ripper victims. He enlists the help of Whitney Tremont who works for the Krewe of Hunters. She and her ghost hunting crew are put up in the old Blair House (House of Spirituality). Whitney's specialty is seeing ghosts of animals. It doesn't take long when a ghost hound appears to her to give her clues. More young actresses fall victim to the same fate as Ginger Rockford which leaves the city in panic. It becomes a race against time to find the killer. Is the ghost of Jack the Ripper wreaking havoc or is it someone pretending to be him? I loved the history on Jack the Ripper as well as old Five Points New York in the late 1880's. I figured out who the killer potentially was a little over half way through the book, but that didn't stop me from reading until the end to see if I was right. Another great one from Heather Graham. Heather Graham has quickly become my favorite author. She surprises me with every book she has written because I never see the twist coming. Yet, it has a wonderfully scripted love story!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sacred Evil is a grisly and superb mystery!, August 10, 2011
This review is from: Sacred Evil (Krewe of Hunters, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jack's Back!

New York City Detective Jude Crosby has just been handed a gruesome murder case. The press has dubbed the killer the new Jack the Ripper and if that wasn't enough to start Jude's day off wrong his boss informs him he will be working with a new special unit of the FBI for the duration. Jude never expected his FBI partner to be a petite and beautiful woman.

FBI Agent Whitney Tremont's specialty is film and that makes this case her baby considering the murder has ties to a movie being filmed close to the infamous Blair House in New York City. Whitney doesn't consider her paranormal experience as great as the rest of the Krewe but after arriving at the Blair House she cannot deny the strange occurrences that keep happening. She has partnered up with Detective Jude Crosby and she can tell he doesn't put much faith in her abilities but there is something about the detective that sparks her curiosity.

The Ripper is laying his trail of blood...no one is safe. The city is terrified and it's up to Jude, Whitney and the Krewe of Hunters to decipher the clues that will hopefully lead to the murderer. Can they find the killer before he takes one of their own?

Sacred Evil is a grisly and superb mystery! I was so engrossed throughout Sacred Evil that I thought I was right there with them. The case is dark and ghastly. Jude and Whitney take you right into the thick of it. They have immediate chemistry but it is obvious they are opposites at first-- at least they think they are. I loved that these two met fairly quickly and were together throughout the case trying to figure out the murders. It gave me a chance to get to know both of them as they were getting to know each other. I really love this couple. I enjoyed getting to visit with the rest of the Krewe as well. I'm not sure how Heather Graham keeps coming up with these frightful supernatural stories but I hope they keep coming. Sacred Evil features a beautiful romance set amidst a gritty, eerie outstanding plot. No doubt about it Ms. Graham writes killer mysteries!

3.0 out of 5 stars good but some problems with the story...., January 13, 2012
By
This review is from: Sacred Evil (Krewe of Hunters, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a good book and was coming along nicely until it is 'suddenly ' discovered about a pentagram in the basement of the old wreaked house that they were in and went over with a fine tooth comb and set up equipment in. I was kinda like wait a minute.... that is not possible..then at the ending Whitney is in Judes apartment and Dad Andrew comes through the hidden door.. gives Whitney something to drink.. then all the sudden.. another killer is on the loose in the apartment and Andrew is clueless and hurt. Andrew is a seasoned cop.. how the hell did that dude get in, how did he slip something in a drink that Andrew was going to give Whitney and what?????? it just left me real confused and i had to read it over several times to see if i missed something or a couple of pages.. and where the hell was the cat in all this chaos?? Mine would have attacked the bad dude.
I was liking this book until some of the illogical scenarios

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Love This Series, December 1, 2011
This review is from: Sacred Evil (Krewe of Hunters, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
With this third book in Heather Graham's Krewe of Hunters miniseries, again the
history of the area, very rich and very detailed, is a big part of the story. I have really
enjoyed this aspect of the series especially since the history deals with lore and ghost and
mysteries which still exist into modern day.
Back to the details, something I have come to expect now from Ms. Graham's stories,
the crimes and investigative work were obviously very well researched in this story
dealing with Jack the Ripper. If possible, I think even more so than the second in the
series dealing with the Civil War. Yet, you never get bogged down in them. You may not
always know exactly what is going on, true suspense, but the writing is so clean cut, that
you can easily follow along, being just as confused as the main characters as to what is
going on.

In this book the possible romance is new, and I just about died waiting for it to start. The
connection was made early on, but satisfaction comes much later. I guess my impatience
again was another testament to Graham's true characterization skills. I have just fallen in
love with the characters in this series. They have so much depth to them, and yet they are
all very different.

I really enjoyed the paranormal elements to these stories. From the well-researched
equipment of this ghost hunting crew to their gifted abilities, the plot goes from spooky
to interesting and back again quickly. Captivating is a good word for it. This series has
really drawn me in and kept my attention. I highly recommend it, and I am anxiously
awaiting book four!

4.0 out of 5 stars this book delivers, October 6, 2011
By
This review is from: Sacred Evil (Krewe of Hunters, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
As a fan of author Heather Graham, I am happy to report this book delivers.
Scared Evil is the third book in the Krewe of Hunters series. The FBI team is sent to help N.Y. Detective Jude Crosby. NYPD is investigating murders that are eerily identical to Jack the Rippers. The public is alarmed and news media around the globe are reporting, "Jack is back".
FBI Agent, Whitney Tremont is sent ahead to assist. Jude isn't exactly thrilled about the FBI's involvement. He accepts the help but makes it clear he is the lead. Jude is a dedicated detective and a likable guy. He builds a team he can trust and surrounds himself with competent team members. It is quickly evident that the members of his department like and respect him. While he utilizes his team, he keeps late hours and personally checks out all leads himself.
Whitney tries to make a good impression for her team and Jude quickly learns that she is more than capable. Her people skills put witnesses and suspects at ease allowing Jude to obtain more information. Whitney's special abilities give the team some unexpected clues.
The mystery itself was intense, with a long list of possible suspects. I was intrigued by the suspects, storyline and theories. The paranormal elements in the story were excellent. I found myself wanting to research places, cults and historical events mentioned during the investigation.
The romance between Jude and Whitney was exciting and didn't interfere or overwhelm the overall suspense.
Evil Inside, the fourth installment in the Krewe of Hunters series is now available.
