Kelvin Mockingbird's solo release, Sacred Fire, revisits his roots and the pure joy of learning to play his first flute, given to him by his Uncle Irvin. The album offers eight beautifully simple Navajo flute solos accented only by subtle natural sound effects.
Mockingbird, of the Dine'/Navajo tribe, describes his music as "Buddha raised on fried bread," which fits the meditative, soulful moods of Sacred Fire well. His emotive soft woodwind notes and breathy trills easily evoke the image of 'The Dance of Butterfly, Badger Girl' gliding up and down between the flutter of wings, the long legatos of "Awakening of the Beauty Within" float above the sounds of birds in a morning meadow, and it's almost possible to picture the round, woody flute tones resonating between an elk's spreading rack in 'A Call to Love.'
Most of the 72-minute CD's tracks are approximately 10 minutes long, each a peaceful short meditation on the purity of Native American flute. I got to meet the artist in Sedona, AZ. He was playing live uptown - his music drew me in; it was so spellbinding! He is a Grammy-nominated musician and a nice guy, to boot. Back to the cd at hand - I play it all the time. It is perfect music to relax to...I even use it to chill out when I'm dealing with the horrific Southern California traffic. It has helped me SO much - it sends me right back to Sedona. This is the perfect cd to use to meditate - it would even be good to use to lull yourself to sleep. However, so far I've only used it during waking hours. It helps me manage my stress level so much; when the first haunting flute notes start, I feel my blood pressure lower immediately. I keep hoping Kelvin comes out with more music soon - very talented young man!!

It takes a sacred heart & soul to create "Sacred Fire", & Kelvin Mockingbird certainly did! The music takes you to a place of peace, internal balance and easily makes you let go of all your tensions and focuses on a magical universal connection. This is beautiful music. I can listen to this on repeat continuously. This is simple, melodic, relaxing Native American flute. For the most part, the notes are low and meditative with a slight canyon echo effect. I've heard plenty of Native American flute music but this man is simply enchanting. His style is unique and cannot be duplicated. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of Native American flute. This CD will turn your entire body into jelly and if you're lying down, you will fall asleep for sure. One of the songs is a bit more up-beat and would give you an energetic jolt, but it's still fantastic and will really illustrate Kelvin Mockingbird's talent. I love this guy! I wish he had a lot more albums.
