5.0 out of 5 stars African rhythms, flute, and vocals masterfully blended, November 21, 2001

Nicholas' second album, and he only got better. Once again he performs the drumming and flute himself, adds his own vocals and other instrumental performances, and brings in such notables as native vocalists, Zavier on guitar, and Karen Briggs (Yanni, etc) on violin (though he does perform most of the music himself, he adds guests on most tracks). Nicholas' style is a unique blend of Southwest/Tribal and African with influences from all over. It's not a hodgepodge, even though it might sound like it: it's a masterfully blended mixture of complementary sounds and musical traditions. Nicholas' flute playing is melodic and uplifting. The percussion is all on acoustic instruments of various types, and the synth fills in the edges. The music is introspective, stating a theme and elaborating on it, but not boring - he is a great composer. Ranging from majestic to fiery, the album will inspire you, calm you, cleanse your soul, invigorate you. It is truly an album that must be heard all the way through. You will remember the first time you hear this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Music, October 27, 2002

I have recently purchased two albums by Nicholas Gunn: The Sacred Fire and The Music of the Grand Canyon. I really like The Sacred Fire album - think it's a very nicely flowing, refreshing music (and that's why I gave it a 5-star rating) - however, it seems like the other albums (judging from my second CD and samples of music of the other albums) are very similar to this one. Again, I LIKE this music, but don't like it when artists put out one album after another, being just a mild variation on the 'blue print' album.

Personally, I would've been happy with just this one album, The Sacred Fire, as a 'representative' of Nicholas Gunn's music - save your money on buying other 'copies' of it (through the other CDs) and instead try an album by some other artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystifying...provacative...wonderful..., December 29, 1998
By A Customer

I bought this CD while visiting, of all places, Nashville, Indiana in a quaint Native American shop that was playing the CD. Haunting, mystical, and upbeat, Nicholas Gunn is simply the best flutist I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. I've visited the west several times; his music always brings back fond memories. You won't regret buying "The Sacred Fire."

This is the most beautiful selection of pieces I have ever heard. From the mystic sounding "SACRED FIRE" to the hauntingly beautiful "RUBY FOREST" and "MIDNIGHT HOUR" these themes stay with your soul long after the music ends. YOU GOTTA BUY THIS ONE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful !!!, November 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sacred Fire (Audio CD)
The style of the music is both soothing and at times, makes you want to get up and dance. The style of each song is so unique. You can sense the native american rythm, and combined with a new age beat, it is great. It's hard to even classify it as mellow, but it certainly does relax you!!

The music is incredible. You will want to listen to it with a good sound system. The music sounds best when you are able to have some bass to it. You get lost in the songs, sometimes feeling like you are out in the desert riding a horse. Sometimes in some sort of "dream".

It's hard to describe, but the music and the cover have the same "feel".

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Gunn's best CD, March 22, 2010

In my opinion, "Sacred fire" is Gunn's best CD. The mixture of keyboards, flute and other instruments is beautiful on this CD. Nicholas Gunn is a master on the flute and he plays it beautifully. I first heard "Sacred Fire" at a friends house and after I heard it, I knew I had to buy it. I ordered it on Amazon the next day. I was so impressed with the originality of his music. While listening, I feel I am moved to a different time and place. I envision the beautiful scenery of the desert southwest. I live in Pueblo, Colorado and Pueblo very much has a desert southwest flavor and feel. I find this music so relaxing and peaceful. My mother was a flute teacher and I am reminded of her playing when listening to "Sacred Fire". I love this CD and listen to it often. In my opinion, this CD is Gunn's best work. Two thumbs up!
