Tibetan Instrumental Alternative,
This review is from: Sacred Instrumental Music (Audio CD)
As part of its series of limited-edition discs to raise awareness of the precarious circumstances (i.e. kidnapped at age six in 1995 and held in "protective custody" by the Chinese government since that time) of the "second most important spiritual person in Tibet": the Panchen Lama, OgreOgress has released this particular volume of purely instrumental music as found in Tibetan monasteries---in this case in the Panchen Lama's own monastic home of Tashi Lhunpo. When a good number of the discs available of Tibetan sacred music come with an urban beat behind it or have served as soundtracks to movies, it is fortunate that we have these up-to-date recordings performed by one of the authoritative groups of Tibetan monks today. Of special interest here are the alternating tracks of gyaling music. The Tibetan equivalent of a western oboe, this not-easily-mistaken instrument is "often played when receiving respected teachers and for inviting and making offerings to enlightened beings." Track 5, "Welcoming Respected Teachers," provides an engaging contrast to the gyaling tracks with its own extended study in timbres and aural effects for ceremonial long horns. A companion disc (also limited edition) may be found at Sacred Prayers for H.H. the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama.Sacred Prayers for H.H. the Dalai Lamas and Panchen Lamas A third disc of monastic chanting seems to have already gone out of print. A must for the collector of world musics in their pure form.
