Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA. Religious expeditions of all faiths can be explored by reading this wonderfully illustrated work. Arranged as a pilgrimage, the chapters begin with "Longing" and "Getting Ready." Later they include "Doubt and Hope," and conclude with "Reflection and Redirection" and "Coming Home." Inserted into the narrative are double-page, first-person accounts and maps of modern pilgrimages. Usually, the featured sites are from religions that permit nonbelievers to participate. Creative page layouts draw readers into the text. Sometimes the print encircles a quote or meaningful symbol; often it surrounds a photo or map. Concise descriptions of each site and information about visiting it such as route, rules, dates, etc., are included. The resource list goes beyond the traditional bibliography as it includes names, addresses, and phone numbers of religious organizations throughout the world, which could provide a wealth of additional information for students of comparative religions.?Claudia Moore, W. 4.0 out of 5 stars Pilgrimage journeys, October 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sacred Journeys: An Illustrated Guide to Pilgrimages Around the World (Hardcover)
This is a fascinating book highlighting many of the pilgrimage destinations in the world. It is a compilation of personal accounts of pilgrimage journeys of about twenty different people. It features colour and black and white photographs, drawings, sketches, symbols, strip maps. I found the layout design of the book rather confusing! Each story uses different fonts in different sizes with quotes jutting into the text, and some pages haave two columns of text and others one or three columns - very odd!
In spite of the odd design and layout it is a book you will refer to often as you dream of making pilgrimagees around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource For Spiritual Seekers, February 1, 2002
This review is from: Sacred Journeys: An Illustrated Guide to Pilgrimages Around the World (Hardcover)
I purchased this book to learn about the Road to Santiago, but I have read it cover to cover. It covers sacred pilgrimages made by believers of many religions and over most of the planet. The author shows respect for all seekers and pilgrimages, and explains their purposes so that I could understand why this pilgrimage was important to each faith. I really loved the practical information, such as the detailed maps of the route, and have referred back to many of the pilgrimages often. An outstanding collection for anyone who wants to understand more about the nature of the spiritual journey.
