a voice teacher and early music fan,
This review is from: Sacred Music (Audio CD)
EXCELLENT COMPILATION OF PURCELL'S MUSIC.
CD 1 is performed by the very fine Clare College Choir, Cambridge; conductor Timothy Brown. They are accompanied by strings, theorbo and organ. Too add to the Purcellian affect there is a real listening treat provided by the Baroque Brass of London. Some of their selections are: 'My Beloved Spake','Jubilate Deo', 'Te Deum'and 'In the Midst of Life'. I was so pleasantly surprised by the voices of this choir, especially the countertenors; just exquisite. The instrumental accompaniment for all of the selecions was notably outstanding. CD 2 begins with the UK's fineset male alto: Michael Chance. He sings several lute songs from his disc "Music for A While". My favorites from his nine songs are: 'Strike the Viol','Sweeter than Roses', 'In the black dismal dungeon of despair' and 'An Evening Hymn'.If you have not heard his voice before, then this set is a 'must'. The last half of CD2 is a miscellaneous group of both vocal and instrumental PURCELLIAN FAVORITES. Some of these are: 'Dance of the Furies' and 'Dance of the Bacchanals' from the play 'Dioclesian' and there is one selection from the play 'Timon of Athens'. This is a lot of music for the price, and it's especially good if you don't have very much of Purcell in your listening library.
