Helfpul introduction to Wales, its people and religions,

This review is from: The Sacred Places of Wales: A Modern Pilgrimage (Paperback)
I read this book before traveling to Wales and it was very helpful in planning our family's itineraries. Peter Williams (not a relative!) includes some great stories from history and mythology, surrounding Christian and pagan places of interest. Each chapter has enough information to whet the appetite, but not so much as to bog the reader down. If you're planning a visit to Wales this would be a great little book to read first.

This review is from: The Sacred Places of Wales: A Modern Pilgrimage (Paperback)
If you will be traveling in Wales and want to get a sense of the places people have considered special or sacred from prehistoric times to the present, this slim but charming guide might be for you. Beginning with the Severn Bridge and the Wye Valley, it takes drivers (and it does seem to be designed for car touring, not for those relying on rail or bus) to sacred sites in all three major regions of Wales. The guide is organized around five major cathedrals and their environs, so it is the Christian pligrimage sites that are emphasized, but the author does not neglect the region's rich prehistoric landscape of cromlechs, barrow mounds and stone tombs, from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. He provides detailed driving directions to each site from the major motorways, as well as some black-and-white photos, historical background and description. This is NOT designed to be a basic guide; travelers will need a more comprehensive one with maps, lodging and dining information, and more in-depth historical and cultural information in addition to this book. However, if you're planning a car trip and looking for indications to some off-the-beaten-path sites, this might be just the thing.
