5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Tibetan Sacred Chant, January 21, 2012
As part of its series of limited-edition discs to raise awareness of the precarious circumstances (i.e. kidnapped at age six in 1995 and held in "protective custody" by the Chinese government since that time) of the "second most important spiritual leader in Tibet": the Panchen Lama, OgreOgress has released this particular volume of sacred chants written especially for the Dalai and Panchen Lamas---and performed in this case by monks from the Panchen Lama's own monastic home of Tashi Lhunpo.

When a good number of the discs available of Tibetan sacred music comes with an urban beat behind it or has served as the soundtrack to a movie, it is fortunate that we have these up-to-date recordings performed by one of the authoritative groups of Tibetan monks around.

Most of the music here is the deep, sometimes guttural chanting of the Tibetan monks familiar to many by now. Gyaling (Tibetan ceremonial oboes) and percussion are also employed. This item is most important for the world music listener in the sense that it seems to represent a formally structured contemporary prayer liturgy/suite of pieces intended specifically for the well-being of both the Dalai and Panchen Lama.

A companion disc (also limited edition) may be found at Sacred Instrumental Music. A third disc, also of monastic chanting, seems to have already gone out of print.

A must for the collector of world musics in their pure form.
