5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I've always loved the word 'serendipity,' and that's what happened when I read this book. It's the first novel I've read by Bennett, and I'll immediately find more by him. This one is a fictional autobiography about the life and loves of a British woman in the late 19th century. It's the first book I've read from this era in which a male author writes a story in first...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start, terrible ending
I downloaded this book to my kindle because it was free and had a good review. The first part of the book was very good and I agree with the previous reviewer, that the best part was the author's descirptions of the music. I gave this book 3 stars because it was free. If I had spent money, it would have been much lower. The ending of the book is the worst- so bad that I...

I've always loved the word 'serendipity,' and that's what happened when I read this book. It's the first novel I've read by Bennett, and I'll immediately find more by him. This one is a fictional autobiography about the life and loves of a British woman in the late 19th century. It's the first book I've read from this era in which a male author writes a story in first person with a female protagonist. It must have been a little shocking when it was published in 1905- she loses her virginity in a one-night stand followed by a morning-after scene in the bed, she has a fling with a married man and later shacks up with a man. The story has very few characters, and there isn't much conversation- most of it takes place in the woman's head. The ending of Part 2 is surprising, and the ending of the book is unexpected and sudden. The author does an excellent job describing things, especially music in Part 1. I liked this book a lot, will read it again soon, and am looking forward to more by Bennett.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sacred and Profane Love, March 19, 2011

Such a good beginning, such a crappy end! In my opinion the writer got tired of writing this book and ended it....in a terrible way. If I had known it would abruptly end as it did....I would have skipped reading this one!!!
