He attended Rutgers University where he studied music theory with New York composer Philip Corner and jazz improvisation with Ted Dunbar. Marco spent many years as a journeyman guitarist, guitar teacher, songwriter and bandleader, performing continually in local and European venues, and producing and releasing a numerous recordings along the way. More recently, he studied conga drumming and Afro-Cuban percussion in New York City with Latin music great Bobby Sanabria.
In addition to his musical background, Marco has spent over 10 years of studies encompassing comparative religion, metaphysics, shamanism, Tibetan Buddhism, and alternative medicine. He is a dedicated organic gardener, organic foods activist, and self-taught herbal healer.
Marco pursues the practice and study of sacred sound - the use of sound as a medium for healing and spiritual evolution. He creates new music using instruments from the worlds sacred sound traditions, notably, Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and percussion and strings of all kinds.
His recordings under the name XUMANTRA have garnered critical praise in the New age music scene. His three CD releases on his own XONIC label - Singing Bowls, Sacred Singing Metals, and The Golden Portal - are distributed nationally and have received extensive radio airplay, including appearances on Music From the Hearts of Space, one of the most-listened to syndicated music radio programs in the country.

Xumantra (shoo-mantra), cosmic voyagers,
By "giligadi" (Chico, CA United States) - See all my reviews

I have not read much about the members of Xumantra or their artistic aims, but fortunately, their music pretty much seems to speak for itself. This is not so much an album as it is a headspace- created by gongs, bells, bowls, and other metallic implements used in meditation and ritual in the east- which will serve to relax and center you, no matter what your beliefs may be. Buy this album, buy some incense (I recommend Nag Champa), turn out the lights, and just EXIST in the music, if you have the courage. This is not party music, and it is not 'easy listening'.. it is simply sculpted sound with magnificent power and scope. And yet it is extremely minimalistic. A person conditioned by commercial radio and television might call it boring, but the fact that Xumantra doesn't call to mind the flashing lights and flickering images of our modern world only adds to their appeal. If you like this, you may also want to look into the works of Steve Roach, Robert Rich, percussionists like Jim McGrath and tuvan singers like Jim Cole (Colescence).

I have always been entranced by the sustained tones of Tibetan bowls. Incorporating these beautiful tones into songs that have a recognizable developed melody line makes this collection especially enjoyable.

This is just not for me. I thought there would be more to it. I found it to be quite agitating.
