Lovely poetic debut,
By
This review is from: Sacred Things (Paperback)
Aaron Rudolph's poems evoke a strong sense of place, a place not often represented in American literature--the backroads of the Southwest, a place where Mexican immigrants live alongside their more "American" compatriots. Aaron's own mixed background emerge through these poems, as does his feeling (which we all can relate to) of being a stranger in the world, the one soul for whom the "Last Seat on the Bus" is reserved. Rudolph's own influences--Valerie Martinez and Martin Espada--come through in this work, but he goes beyond them to create a language and feeling of his own. I'm looking forward to more collections in the future.

I'm recommending this book to anyone who likes fresh writing. Even if you aren't a person who usually reads poetry, you will enjoy this collection.

Very impressed,

I stumbled onto this book in a little used book store in denver and am very impressed. The poem "Poem" is about as funny a poem I've ever read and the rest of this text is funny, thought-provoking and very well written. I do think he could be a little clearer in a couple of his poems verbage but overall I think this a a really good-almost great book of poetry. I've let several friends look at it, and they love it. It is well worth the bargain price... I write fiction, and I can tell the work that went into this text. Anyway, this is a find and a gem.

Emerging Poet with Amazing Potential,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sacred Things (Paperback)
This collection of poems shows that we are greeting Aaron Rudolph at the beginning of a great career. He has found a depth in these poems that most poets achieve only late in life, and a grace that some poets never achieve. Rudolph helps the reader understand the unjustified occurrences in life and how to accept them with humor. I specifically recommend these poems for younger readers, as many of the poems deal with coming-of-age issues, and how an adult remembers childhood relationships.

The Best Poetry I've Read in a Long Time,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sacred Things (Paperback)
This collection is by far the best poetry I've read in a long time. Aaron isn't one of those stiff academic "poets". I could relate to just about everything in this book and I laughed in a few places. This is modern poetry at its best. He doesn't overplay the "southwest" feel, either; just enough to give the work character.

Refreshing !,
This review is from: Sacred Things (Paperback)
What a gem. This is an up and coming poet and his first book is not to be missed. It is subtle and refreshing, down to earth, real and unpretentious. These are poems that readers can relate to. Sometimes you smile; sometimes you are hit with a feeling of nostalgia or the ache of loneliness; repeatedly you feel.

poor work from a press that has little to offer,
By Master of (sitting here) - See all my reviews

I found this book as well in a used book bin. I'd heard of this press from a very local MN paper. It only stuck out at me because the head of the press came across to me as a real case of delusional grandeur. The poetry in this book is loose and lacking intensity, poorly written and obviously with little care for a reader or other writers. Hopefully, this press won't be putting out much else in a long, long time.
