5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Beautiful
This was my introduction to the Bhagavad Gita. I bought it two weeks ago and have not stopped listening to it. I take it on my walk with me everyday. It keeps me centered throughout the day. Deepak's voice is heavenly, the classical Indian music is hauntingly beautiful, and the verses are,of course, sacred! I have since bought Yogananda's translation of the Gita and...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I had hoped for some traditional mantra, chant or prayer, or even a nontraditional one, sung in some traditional or relevant melody. Not so. This consists of speaking, some mythology/theology, some prayer. There is a background of flute and tabla, sitar/tamboura and tabla, and sometimes vocalization.

The theology here is in my opinion a terribly brief survey.

To me...

Deepak's voice is heavenly, the classical Indian music is hauntingly beautiful, and the verses are,of course, sacred! To me the spoken content was largely undecipherable. The voice is too deep for easy comprehension of new terms. The voice falls off in volume very often. The musical background, while pleasant, also interferes with comprehension.

I have no argument with the music by itself, nor with the content, what little I could understand. Perhaps this would be a good tape for mood-setting. But one might suggest that it is only for the hardcore Chopra fans.

Although I have heard the "Sacred Verses, Healing Sounds--HYMNS OF THE RIG VEDA," the above review refers to the "Sacred Verses, Healing Sounds--BHAGAVAD GITA." Unfortunately, my review went to Vol. II rather than Vol. I. The Hymns of the Rig Veda is also good, but I highly recommmend Vol. I, the Bhagavad Gita.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't see thru the smoke!, April 4, 2011

This review is from: Sacred Verses, Healing Sounds: Hymns of the Rig Veda (Audio Cassette)
Tell me how does a guy like DChopra who used to be a doctor - and yet was a chain smoker - and now writes on spiritual/physical health - can be taken seriously. He is a total conman of the highest order. A total seducer of the weak and vunerable. You will never see him contend in a feild where the people are strong. This is another one of his cryptic TM mind numbing, state altering demonised nonsense. I guess he smokes gold cigs now he a $$$air...not a trustworthy man by any standards - a hyprocrite advertising a another 'cure' for all - yet uncured himself. He neither knows nor understands the depth of knowledge he claims and other like him in this feild push the same nonsense under different names but its all in the same category - conmen out to clean-up on the weak and vunerable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peacebringing, July 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sacred Verses, Healing Sounds: Hymns of the Rig Veda (Audio Cassette)
Deepak Chopras' sensitive reading and the magical sounds allow one to understand the meaning of life and the universe in the most simplistic and easily understood way. The more often I listen to it, the happier and more at peace I feel. I know know it by heart, and listen to it every night when I rest next to my four year old son who has down's sndrome and wait peacefully with him to fall asleep. He usually has difficulty falling asleep, but with the comforting sounds of Deepak's voice, he falls asleep, sometimes within seconds of hearing the words and music. I am then left with a few rare moments of bliss while I learn something new after hearing many of the same passages over, time again. Each time you hear them, you learn more as you relate them to your everyday life. I intend to learn more about Krishna soon, and I often wish that I could join Mr. Chopra on his trip this November to visit India in Agra, Krishna's birthplace and to meet the Dhali Lama and tour the Taj Mahal. See his website at the Chopra Center in San Diego to learn more about exploring India with Mr. Chopra. Thank you Mr. Chopra for enlightening so many lives, including mine and that of my entire family.

I thought this was going to be more like someone reading the psalms, but of course not of the same philosphy. Anyway, the sound is good.
