Editorial Reviews

Review

“Sweeping across continents and centuries, The Mortal Path by Dakota Banks is story-telling at its most vivid. The characters are fascinating, the plot nail-biting, and the period pieces memorable. Curl up in your favorite chair - entertainment is guaranteed.”

From the Back Cover

A demon's enslaved executioner—a ravager of lives and souls—Maliha Crayne has been reborn, willing to sacrifice her immortality for a chance at freedom . . . and salvation. Now she has an opportunity to prevent the death of thousands—perhaps tens of thousands—to make up for the countless lives she has obliterated over the centuries. To do so, she must locate and destroy an evil cabal of madmen in possession of a weapon of unspeakable power—and survive the immortal assassins who are now after her blood. But it means reverting to the old ways and surrendering once more to the darkness. And if Maliha dies before the mission is accomplished, the hell she once knew will seem like a picnic compared to the eternal torments awaiting her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid second in the series January 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you want an action-packed, intrigue-filled, non-stop ride, look no further. After setting the stage in Dark Time: Mortal Path Book 1, Dakota Banks pulls out all the stops in this book. Having established who and what Maliha is and what she needs to do in order to save herself from an eternity of torture at the hands of a sadistic Sumerian demon, we jump right in as she is nearly killed in a nasty spectacular car wreck (caused by a bullet). Whew, that was close!

In this episode, Maliha continues on her quest to find the remaining shards of the Diamond Lens and encounters several Ageless still in the service of their demons, one who has been tasked with collecting the shards from her as she finds them. As another reviewer indicated, this episode definitely takes on a Bond-ish feel due to the over-the-top nature of the villainous organization and weapon involved.

It seemed for awhile there that Maliha was settling down with her 'family,' but we see a return to her old ways as she once again dons the mantle Black Ghost in order to get to the bottom of the mystery central to this episode. Generally books like this don't consider the internal conflict within a character -- and this one isn't terribly deep -- but we do see some of Maliha's struggle between light and dark within herself, especially when she is tempted...

Summary: good, solid pulp fiction with better than average character development and a setup for the next episode.

4.0 out of 5 stars An action filled dark urban fantasy September 25, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Sacrifice by Dakota Banks

The young mother from Dark Time returns. [...]
Her quest to bring the demons down continues, complicated by her ambivalent love triangle. Her new mortality is impacting her morality. She faces both internal and external conflict in her ongoing quest.

As I noted in my review of Dark Time, the revoking of her ageless infallibility and her now more credible skill set helps in creating a more believable and likeable Maliha. I find her struggle with the changes she has undergone to make her a more believable character. The skill set she lost needs to be affirmed by the satisfaction of balancing her scale. The conflict between delayed gratification and immediate gratification is one faced by most people on a daily basis. It gives Maliha depth.

In Bank's cynical, harsh world tragedy and violence abound. This is an action filled dark urban fantasy.

I recommend the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Demons Enslaved Executioner September 20, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The story begins with Maliha Crayne she is an assassin of a demon. For centuries, until she called him out on the stipulation in her contract that states if she can save enough souls she will be free of him forever. She forms a group of friends who are part of a team she has formed to do right by humans. She has two missions in this story to save mankind from a terrible nano virus that another ancient has gone out of his way to use to take out mankind. Similar to the Ebola virus. Plus she is trying to destroy all the demons who keep people like her as slave assassins. Jam packed with everything you look for in a book and more. Dakota Banks characters are varied and make you want to know them. This is her second installment of The Mortal Path series and I cannot wait to see what this great writers has in store for us next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mortal Path Series Picks Up Pace and Action! April 16, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
A favorite author of mine, Heather Graham, uses "chilling" as one of her descriptors for Sacrifice. Indeed! Maliha Crayne has "seen the light" you might say as, in Book One, she chooses to save a child rather than allow it to die along with the mother that her demon had ordered her to murder. She had been an assassin for Rabishu, a demon who controlled her for hundreds of years, but had played the one card that could allow her redemption--and she took it. Now she had lost her immortality, her complete ability to heal and many of her powers.

But she was still fighting and killing--only now it was against evil!

And fighting to balance the scale from all of her former misdeeds is, surely, hell to pay! To clarify, the god Anu, who is allowing her the opportunity to redeem herself, sits in judgment as to what counts in the balancing act. Carved into her chest is a set of scales, with tiny figures on each, now seriously one-sided after the thousands of deaths she has caused. But, whenever she saves one or more lives, the figures actually move from one side to the other...each carving the way, to the agony and torment of Maliha, as an emphasis, I suppose, to the importance of what she is now doing to atone for her sins...

Sometimes saving the individual gets personal, as her friend Hound begs for her assistance to save his lover after she was kidnapped while delivering medical supplies for the World Health Organization. They got Glass out, but it took outside help to save Maliha--a Roman Centurion! A very handsome one...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! October 19, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Now, one bad azz babe with kicks that kill, Maliha was once a simple wife and healer. Leading a pleasant life with her husband and expecting her first child, Maliha never could have foreseen her true future. Branded a witch by a jealous lady friend, Maliha was stoned by the town's people, including her own husband, and subsequently burned at the stake. When approached by Rabishu, a vile and evil demon, Maliha could not see beyond anything but her obsession for vengeance. Accepting a life of servitude as Rabishu's assassin, Maliha soon became a vicious force to be reckoned with.

After centuries of acting as a demon's killing machine, Maliha has checked her conscience and left the murderous life of the Ageless to become Rogue. With comparatively little time ahead of her, Maliha is now faced with the nearly impossible task of "balancing the scales". She must fight evil to save enough lives to obtain said balance and reclaim her soul.

In Sacrifice, the second of the Mortal Path Series, Dakota Banks brings to the table another great installment rife with "in your face" violence. Most definitely not for the faint of heart, Maliha's quest to cleanse her soul will take readers inside the mind and brutal nature of a former assassin.

While quite a bit darker and much more violent than the stories this reader is used to, Banks' ability to carry through the evil and lead the reader to understanding, and even caring, for Maliha is remarkable. Admittedly, Maliha's intentions are for good, it's her methods that made me squirm. Yet, through Banks talent, the brutal nature of the story is excellently countered with the good intention making the reader feel much compassion for Maliha's plight.

More About the Author

Dakota Banks has worn a number of hats, including those of corporate analyst, independent computer consultant, and pet store employee (the one who cleans the cages). When she tried on a writer's hat, something magical happened: It stuck to her head, no matter how hard she tried to shake it off and get back to something that paid the mortgage.

Growing up in a converted 1890s funeral home, complete with blood gutters in the basement floor, fueled Dakota's interest in the paranormal. Fascinated with archaeology since childhood, she found a way to blend her background with her passion in the story line for her Mortal Path series of urban fantasies.

Dark Time: Mortal Path Book 1 is a suspenseful paranormal thriller laced with ancient legends and a quest for redemption, a frightening scenario that could be tomorrow's headlines, and a heady dollop of romance. Maliha Crayne an action-oriented and sensual heroine. She walks among us, but lives a far different life as she risks her own in protection of the innocent. Sacrifice, book 2, and Deliverance, book 3 (March 2012), continue Maliha's adventures.

Dakota is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and lives in a St. Louis suburb with her husband, two sons adopted from Peru and Ethiopia, and two cats Snickers and Marble, who sometimes ghostwrite her books. Good stuff, too, if you speak Cat.
