Amazon.com Review

Sacrifice is one of those rare games that comes along far too infrequently. It isn't derivative, it isn't clichéd, and it isn't poorly thought out or tired in any way. In fact, in almost every conceivable way it's unique, powerful, fully realized, and features deep, absorbing gameplay.

The story is where this game really shines. You portray an alien wizard who escapes his ruined dimension to a new, even weirder one. Five gods rule this new world. Noble Persephone is the goddess of life, simple James controls the Earth, bombastic Pyro controls fire, wicked Charnel rules destruction and death, and the haughty Stratos (voiced by Tim Curry) is master of air. They bicker and fight throughout. It's your choice whom to serve before each mission. In addition, each mission you complete bestows upon you some of their unique powers and monsters. Because the campaign is dependent upon which god you serve and when, you'll end up with vastly different power combinations each time you play.

The game plays like Activision's Battlezone remake from a while back. It's played like an action game--you can see from behind the shoulder of your wizard character--yet it has Command & Conquer-style real-time strategy components. You have to harvest souls from fallen enemies and troops, summon and control your own army of fascinating monsters, and control the magical resources known as Mana Fountains. The game is daunting and the action may be too frantic for some, but all its components are detailed in an impressive tutorial and tips are scattered throughout the game.

Add instant action play, a host of maps, a complete game editor (ensuring fan- created levels will flood the Internet soon), and a stable multiplayer component, and you'll find unlimited value in the game. Sacrifice is more than just a quirky new PC game, it's a bona fide classic. --Bob Andrews

Pros:

  • Deep story and gameplay
  • Excellent voice acting and audio
  • Full multiplayer support and addictive action
Cons:
  • May be too complicated for some gamers
  • High system requirements

5.0 out of 5 stars A stellar game by any measure!, June 18, 2001
This review is from: Sacrifice (CD-ROM)
Remember all those things recent games were supposed to offer? Gorgeous, detailed graphics, getting to play god, intersting creatures and minions. Well, while many others ended up with a few failings, Sacrifice truly shines in all of these areas, plus more.

The graphics are amazing. It offers a true, HUGE 3-D world that you roam around, under and through. You get to choose from one of 5 different gods, from the Earthy James to the fire-inspired Pyro and others. The gods are not content with each other, and their back-and-forth is half of the fun. Each has different spells, creatures, techniques, aims, and attitudes.

With all of the things to keep track of, you might think you'd be overwhelmed. However, the tutorials are fantastic and easy to work through. There are so many different ways you can approach it - as a true-to-one-god roleplaying, as a strategic mission, as a hack-and-slash adventure. The game supports you no matter which way you go, and the graphics and music surround you in lush beauty.

A must-have for any gamer looking for a worthy time-sink! This is one game I *love* writing the walkthroughs for!

5.0 out of 5 stars Throw away Diablo II... Sacrifice is in town, November 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sacrifice (CD-ROM)
I am a member of the press, and when I got my copy of Sacrifice for review, I have been playing it non-stop. It's been hard to take time to write the review!

The game has: (1) The most amazing engine I have seen on the PC. (I think Intel wrote some of it) (2) The most amazing graphics I have seen. (I have an Nvidia card) (3) It's a full scale Epic RPG action strategy game (My favorite genre) (4) It has fantastic net-code... I have been playing other editors on Gamespy and the gameplay has been flawless (5) There is a level editor... It looks cool, but I have not had time to try it out yet

Yes I am gushing, but only because I have been hoping the RPG game developers would finally make the break from 2D to 3D... So until Warcraft III comes out next year, Sacrifice is my No #1 pick for Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, April 21, 2001
This review is from: Sacrifice (CD-ROM)
Ok, first of all I gave Sacrifice only 4 stars because the multiplayer portion really is not worth it at the time of this writing. Maybe after they get patch 3 up and running it will be worth a second look. With that aside I have to say this is one of the best games I have played...ever. I will not bore you with details about the plot or characters, you can read other reviews for that. I will just give you a run down on playability, system specs, graphics, etc. I am using an Athlon 850/256megs ram/and a Voodoo 5500 AGP. With this machine the game plays very smoothly and graphics are some of the best I have seen so far. As far as playing on lower end machines, I would have to say you probably would not have as many problems as you may think. You can always "tweak" settings to your system. I would stay with a Pentium 2,3,4, or Athlon only. The speed probably would not be as big a factor as your graphic card. The game play kind of like Battlezone. You are in 3rd person view and can control you players and participate in battles. There are some resource management in the form of "souls". The more souls you get(from battling opponents), the more troops you can build. This is a very easy to master setup. The learning curve is not steep at all. The 3 tutorial games are first rate and bring you up to speed slowly. If you like strategy games with great graphics and the ability to go anywhere on the massive game maps, this is for you. Oh by the way, there is a good bit of exploring to do on the huge maps. There are no load times, once a map loads that is it.
