4.0 out of 5 stars Annja is back on track!

3.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Recent Books
I have read every book in this series and I had almost passed on this book because of the decrease in the quality of the writing in the series. As another reviewer pointed out, this book is better than the previous two. I'm not sure if this is meant as a "Young Adult" series, but the writing often seems to be on a middle-school level. I have read every book in this series and I had almost passed on this book because of the decrease in the quality of the writing in the series. As another reviewer pointed out, this book is better than the previous two. I'm not sure if this is meant as a "Young Adult" series, but the writing often seems to be on a middle-school level. The basic premise of the series is great, but better writers need to be hired (I assume that everyone knows that "Alex Archer" does not exist). I warn the publishers, however, if I read that Annja SMIRKED one more time, I am throwing the book against wall and abandoning the series. Mature heroes/heroines do not smirk often, if at all (smirk - "smile in an irritatingly smug, conceited, or silly way"). I swear one recent book had her smirking 40 times. Fortunately, the last author must have discovered a thesaurus because she only smirked once that I remember.

I was disappointed in the previous two books in this series, but this one seems to have gotten our heroine back to where she should be.

After being mistakenly kidnapped on a research trip to the Philippines, Annja finds herself lost in the deep jungle and hunted by terrorists. The story unfolds rather predictably with Annja surviving on her wits and a bit of luck, takes a more supernatural turn and gets a little strange, then jumps back into the normal. (remember the second Indiana Jones movie?)

One complaint I've had about previous books in the series is that the wrap-up occurs within the bounds of a single chapter and it seems rushed. This one is different in that, even after the first conflict is resolved, there is more that must be discovered, planned and resolved differently. It felt almost like a James bond film -- in this case, that was a good thing.

Like _Polar Quest_, Garin and Roux are not even mentioned in this story. Because of the setting for most of the story, mention of them would have had to be an aside or flashback, so I believe it woks here. Unfortunately, the mythology of the Sword cannot be further understood without either of them involved, so this is more an action story than actually furthering our knowledge of Annja or the Sword.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crap- not worthy of Rogue Angel title, September 8, 2010
This review is from: Sacrifice (Kindle Edition)
I'm so disappointed. To put it shortly, I will not be purchasing any more Rogue Angel books written by Jon Merz. All of the ones credited to him have been sorely lacking, and have not done justice to the character of Annja Creed. Those who read the first few books don't need me to summarize Annja, but the first part of this book has her wondering if the terrorists who kidnapped her were aroused by her body when they forced her to change clothes, almost as if she were hoping for it. Seriously? is there a woman in the workd who would have even thought of something like that, let alone a hero like Annja Creed?

I don't want to trash Jon Merz, so I won't. I didn't read the rest of this book, I just don't like where Merz takes Annja. I won't be purchasing any more of this series written by him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guess I Smirked, April 17, 2010

Lol, I read a review before buying this book. One of the complains was the use of the word Smirk to often in previous books. LOL, so the SMIRKS jump out at me in this one. By both Annjo and Vic.

For other looking to get a good action fantasy adventure this is about 4 stars over all. But if you have read others in this series its only 3 stars. I have noticed the detioration in writing and this is common with a long time publisher own series. World Wide own this story/universe and hires writer to write the stories. Alex Archer is just a Trademark they own and use as the authors name.

So you the reader can never expect one book after the other to be as good. I mentioned that she need to take it up another level. I mean Garvin and Roux both are rich she needs to start building finaincal armour for protection.

IF nothing else get them two to help her start writing stories and novels of her adventures. lol. make maoney while doing good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Annja is back on track, September 23, 2009

This review is from: Sacrifice (Rogue Angel #18) (Mass Market Paperback)
I've read all the books in the Rogue Angel series thus far and I have to say this is one of my favorites. Actually, in my opinion, this is the best book since Serpent's Kiss.
Annja is back in character and is much more human than in previous books, depending on a marine for survival in the jungle for example.
The book keeps you interested until the end, the whole crocodile thing was ridiculous, but after that incident the book picks up again and has a great plot twist at the end that really surprised me.
Another issue is the authors lack of knowledge about the US marine corps, I served 5 years in the corps and their was definitely some flaws with the sniper...however i don't take anything away from the book since it is fiction and the general reader wouldn't be able to pick up on the flaws.
Overall this is worth reading as a fan of the series or as a stand alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Read, July 24, 2009
This review is from: Sacrifice (Rogue Angel #18) (Mass Market Paperback)
To be honest, the last few Rogue Angel books have been uneven and have fallen victim to the dreaded "forumla." In particular, Annja doesn't really search for anything. The stories basically run her around, get shot at (frequently) and is handed artifacts on a platter.

Sacrifice, however, was a refreshing break. The story was truly engaging and was a truly entertaining read from start to finish. In the story, Annja doesn't search for anything other than an escape after being mistakenly kidnapped by a terrorist cell. A well-written deep cover U.S. marine helps to pull the story along.

I was ready to give up on the series. Sacrifice will keep me in the game for a little longer.

The past couple of books have Annja suffering a lot of grief with no payoff, this time she gets justice and a really competent guy. But still this book takes us for a ride full of drama, drama, drama.

2.0 out of 5 stars Still the same author?, June 4, 2009
This review is from: Sacrifice (Rogue Angel #18) (Mass Market Paperback)
Is the same author still writing this series? I read something about another writer assisting with an earlier book...
I just couldn't enjoy this book and it took me several days of picking up and putting down to finish instead of all at once like usual. The absence of Garin was a factor, but mainly it was the plot which never left the jungle and was already in progress at the start of the book. There was no artifact or mystery for Anja to unravel and the idea of a crazy tribe in the middle of nowhere was done in another story already...
Another noticable difference, one I really liked, was Anja showing more of a human side as opposed to a robot who is never fazed by anything. She asks girly questions, she complains about the intense heat, sleeping conditions, and overall is more relateable and likeable.
