Dave Evans is an immensely talented guitarist, but sadly his work has gone almost completely unnoticed by everyone except musicians and hard core fans of finger style guitar. This is a collection of his instrumental songs that was originally recorded in 1974. As far as I know the bonus tracks added to the CD reissue along with the original material constitute every solo guitar piece that were ever release under Dave Evans name.

If you enjoy the music of Davey Graham, Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, or any of the finger style guitar giants then you should buy this album. If you're not into those guys, but your ears still function you may want to buy it anyway because this is stunningly beautiful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Setting Dave's record straight November 18, 2006
Format:Audio CD
As the other reviewer pointed out, this is a masterful record, but before I wax loquacious about it I need to point out that this Dave Evans: a) is not the same Dave Evans who has several bluegrass or country albums listed alongside at this Amazon site and b) also had 3 singer/songwriter albums which were released both before and after this incredible collection of instrumentals.

Now that the era of "new age" guitar instrumentalists (who were largely influenced by the likes of Evans) has come & gone, this record looms even larger in the canon of acoustic guitar recordings. Evans'influences as a player tended to be Brits like Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, and Davy Graham, but Evans went on to create his own style and customised alternate tunings (e.g. CGDAD). Between his great right-hand (fingerstyle) technique, his wonderfully original melodic sense and his brilliant chord progressions and arpeggiated riffs, Sad Pig Dance kinda created it's own category of guitar music.

His first 2 (UK only)records from the early 70's "The Words Between" and "Elephantasia" were anthologized a couple of years back on UK label Weekend Beatnik, but his 4th record from the late 70's "Take a Bite Out of Life" (Kicking Mule Records) has yet to see the light of digital day:all of his recordings are HIGHLY recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars not exactly a review....but.... August 11, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I find it wonderfully amazing that this record comes into light once again.
It has been one of my "secret gems" for some almost thirtyfive years now.
Still in my possession the original vinyl-LP purchased in Copenhagen in the
middle of the seventies and still complete with the tablature-booklet and never
even considered to be for sale or swap....still in almost mint condition and
played and played and played over the years....
I was always very confused that this record never gained the attention it, at
least to my opinion, served....Instead there was so much, at least in Scandinavia,
about Stefan Grossman and the ragtime-pickers and such things in those days.
What I am talking about here is the original vinyl issue...so therefore I can not
say so very much about the bonus tracks on the cd-reissue.(But I can of course imagine)
And when it comes to reviewing I can but agree with the two reviews above when it comes
to the music itself.
If nothing revolutionary happens with acoustic fingerpicking guitar music (and by the way
it almost did with Gulezian's Unspoken Intentions ) this one will stand as one of my
all-time-highs in the genre...together with The Yellow Princess, "The Armadillo", "The Sphinx",
The Lost Takoma Sessions and the David Walbert collection by Gilewitz (although the latter
"almost" fits in the cathegory of "HiArtAcademicConservatory" and that is another completely
different story)

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing music April 19, 2014
Format:Audio CD
I had been aware of Dave Evans for many, many years as part of a finger style anthology LP I had along with Davey Graham and a couple other guys, and had a cd copy of sad Pig Dance for quite a while, but had not listened to it. I grabbed it along with a few other cds for a 4 hr round trip drive. Well,I did not listen to any of the others. I listened to this one 4 times. My God, best stuff on solo guitar I have heard in years. So creative, so many twists and turns & none of the usual bag of finger style tricks. Made me go home and pick up my own guitar and play and that's always a good thing, isn't it!
