Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-10-In 12 chapters, this series entry traces the history of Iraq from ancient Mesopotamia to operation Desert Storm. It concentrates, however, on the vile nature of Saddam Hussein, the violent rise in Islamic fundamentalism, and the Gulf War. Claypool overgeneralizes and even admits that some of the material she includes is in fact based on hearsay or unsubstantiated rumor. Indeed, much is left out of this book, such as America's involvement in Iraq prior to the war. Well-captioned photographs in full color and black and white appear throughout. Maps are often incomplete or accompanied by inaccurate material. The Euphrates River is described as flowing westward from Syria, while in fact it must flow southeast. Basra is not on the map, although it is mentioned in the text and is important in recent events. Finally, the index contains a number of irregularities. Libraries should wait for a better-balanced portrait so that readers can compare and contrast points of view.
