5.0 out of 5 stars "Golden Age of B-Westerns ~ the heroine or leading lady"
Empire Publishing presents "Saddle Gals:: A Filmography of Female Players in B-Westerns of the Sound Era" (Paperback), from authors Steve Turner and Edgar M. Wyatt, listing the name of each actress who appeared and who rode along side the heroes of B-Westerns...note the title of the film, studio, year of release and name of the cowboy who was the star...from the sound era...

2.0 out of 5 stars A 95 page check-list of B-Western heroines
A fine tool for the researchers as far as it goes, this ultra-slim volume is written by two well-known enthusiasts. A little broader knowledge of film history, however, could have spared the authors the embarrasment of including French-born ACTOR Jean Del Val among their "Saddle Gals"!

Empire Publishing presents "Saddle Gals:: A Filmography of Female Players in B-Westerns of the Sound Era" (Paperback), from authors Steve Turner and Edgar M. Wyatt, listing the name of each actress who appeared and who rode along side the heroes of B-Westerns...note the title of the film, studio, year of release and name of the cowboy who was the star...from the sound era beginning in 1928 up and including September 12,1954, which was the last B-Western film "Two Guns and a Badge", from Allied Artists with director Lewis D. Collins, featuring Wayne Morris, Beverly Garland, Morris Ankrum, Roy Barcroft, Bob Wilke and I. Stanford Jolley...all in all a wonderful cast for the official closing chapters of a long run of oaters.

The foreword by Jennifer Holt (daughter of Jack Holt and sister to Tim Holt)...introduction by authors Steve Turner and Edgar M. Wyatt noting the importance of the female character who is constantly in trouble and leading our hero into some kind of danger to make the film more exciting.

My favorite heroine of all time was Peggy Stewart from the early days in "Wells Fargo" (1937) with Joel McCrea, "Tucson Raiders" (1944), "Cheyenne Wildcat" (1944), "Sheriff of Las Vegas" (1944), "Marshal of Laredo" (1945), "California Gold Rush" (1946), "Conquest of Cheyenne" (1946), "Sheriff of Red Wood Valley" (1946), "Kansas Territory" (1952) all with Bill Elliott, appear in five films with Allan Lane, eight with Sunset Carson, three with Lash LaRue and two with Jim Bannon...Stewart mainly worked with Republic Studios she always gave us the impression that she was having the time of his life and completely in control.

Hats off to our friends at Empire Publishing as Steve Turner and Edgar M. Wyatt put down on paper without a doubt the best book commemorating the leading lady's and their rare talent that helped make the B-Western great....If you're into the memories of the B-Western, this is the one you've been anxiously waiting for...and saddle gals and pals, it was well worth the wait...another winner from Empire Publishing...gotta love it!

This book was added to all the other films and references to my mother who was in films in the 30's and 40's. Great addition and very interesting collection.
