One of the finest Missouri fiddle players at his best.,
By Ron Nichols (Denver Co. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saddle Old Spike: Fiddle Music from Missouri (Audio CD)
If you like old time fiddle music, this CD is for you. The first thing that strikes you is that there is a lot of music on this CD; 26 fiddle contest tunes. You can hear the fiddle contest in Fred's playing, whether it's the use of drone strings in Burt County Breakdown, the saw strokes on Muddy Waters, or the pizzicato of Rye Whiskey. You can almost see his bow fly. This CD reminds you of going to a fiddle contest and afterwards, some of the judges take a few chairs outside and play for themselves. It would be hard to stand around and listen because, whether you are into Contra or 2 step, you would be looking for a partner to dance. Fred has a few solos on this which he does quite well but for the most of this recording, he is superbly backed up on guitar. Doing the honors are Fred's daughter,Alita, and Gordon McCann.

Nice, clean, old-fashioned fiddling. I'm glad that more and more of this kind of thing is available on CD.
