My Favorite CDB Disc......,
By
This review is from: Saddle Tramp (Audio CD)
I was a big Charlie Daniels fan throughout the 70's, and Saddle Tramp was my faorite album (edging out Fire On The Mountain). The opus title track is definitive CDB, with a great jam session. "its my Life", Cumberland Mountain #9" and "Sweet Louisianna" are all outstanding songs. Only "Wichita Jail" is average. I wore out my vinyl, and am thrilled to have a clean, clear digital version.....BUY THIS

The Ultimate CDB Album,
By B K Fisher (Nashville, TN.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Saddle Tramp (Audio CD)
If you are going to have only one CDB recording in your collection, this is the one to buy. The title cut is a soulful ballad, morphing into a classic southern rock jam, featuring the jazz influences of Taz on the keyboards, along with Tommy Crain's incredible six-string abilities. "It's My Life" shows off Charlie's unique blues vocal talent. "Dixie On My Mind" is a definitive fiddle rocker that showcases the CDB sound that was a result of the cross-breeding of early 70's rock and country. A style that swept the nation in the mid to late 70's and introduced a whole new genre of music to the mainstream. If you love southern rock, don't miss this one.

cdb's finest hour,
By Music Lover "Light and shade" (Clifton, NJ USA) - See all my reviews

Since music always seems to be in needs of unfortunate labeling i've always thought of The Charlie Daniels Band as progressive country. Their musicianship pushes so many different, eclectic musical styles it's hard to classify them as just southern rock or country. This album is my favorite of their catalog and showcases their many talents. "Dixie On My Mind" starts off the album with a burning tempo reminiscent of "Texas" on the previous album. The opus of this record is the title track clocking in at over ten minutes long. This gem shines a light on Charlie's guitar playing as well as Tommy Crain. The double drumming and bass are solid throughout and the often overlooked Taz kicks it on the keys. These guys are incredible musicians. Saw The Cdb two years ago and was surprised and impressed when they performed this song in the set after all these years.
"Sweet Louisiana" is a bluesy romp featuring some more fine guitar work. "Wichita Jail" is short and sweet but contains some typical funny Charlie lyrics. "Cumberland Mountain Number 9" is a Tommy Crain penned tune. Not my favorite of his but it still works. "It's My Life" is a 6 minute diamond with great playing and lyrics. More excellent guitar work on this. They remade this in the 90's but it was definitely missing the jamming and punch of this version. The album closes with one of my all time favorites "Sweetwater, Texas". Charlie wrote this one alone and it features great lyrics and a waltz tempo. He plays a soft fiddle on it and his voice sounds great. This album is a great capsule of the band's abilities. Rock, country, blues, jazz progressions all intertwined throughout 7 songs. The only thing missing is one Taz tune. Would highly recommend this album if you want to find out what the CDB is all about besides the major radio hits.

More Great Charlie Daniels,
By A Customer
This review is from: Saddle Tramp (Audio CD)
SADDLE TRAMP is another great Charlie Daniels album. It contains several great songs, including the hard-jamming title track. If you love A DECADE OF HITS, FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, HIGH LONESOME, MILLION MILE REFLECTIONS, FULL MOON, THE LIVE RECORD, or SUPER HITS, then you'll love SADDLE TRAMP.

Best Advice available,

I bought this years ago in album form. Why? Because at that time I had people pressuring me on how to dress, who to have for friends and a host of other things to make me over into a sophisticated California girl---had just moved from a small town back east.
I heard this on the radio in my car, drove straight to the record store and bought the album. Went right home and made my well meaning "roomies" sit down and LISTEN to the words to "It's MY LIFE". Best advice that anyone could give you-------and it didn't hurt that I LOVE the Blues and this is a great little blues number. Good music and I love that song so much I bought the CD too.

CDB's best!,

I have most of CDB's albums and have been a fan since the mid 70s. This one is my all-time favorite! The tunes I enjoy the most are Saddle Tramp, Dixie On My Mind, and Cumberland Mountain Number Nine. This CD captures Charlie (and Tom Crain) at his best. If I could own but one CDB CD, Saddle Tramp would be it. High Lonesome, Full Moon, and Nightrider are also exceptional. This band has recorded many, many special songs that I'll always treasure. CDB's best stuff never gets played on the radio!

If you lived in Evergreen Colorado in the 70's I think you were required to own this album. It was one of those albums that everyone owned, everyone listened to. I purchased this album through Amazon on cd after having owned it on record, cassette, 8-track. When it arrived, I put it on and was in a time warp back to high school. Pickup trucks, warm beer, good times. There isn't a bad tune on this album. Start to finish, Charlie has the ability to paint a portrait of life in America through his songs that few artists can match. A very nice slice of Americana!

Who Knew Charlie Daniels blows the Allman Bros twin guitar solo's out of the water and plays the Blues like nobodys business. I guess if you do then you already have his albums.

A classic album,
By A Customer
This review is from: Saddle Tramp (Audio CD)
This album contains what we consider "our song"... Sweetwater Texas. It's about how looking back at your life and dreaming about the "girl with the chestnut brown hair." who got away. It's a county waltzy lullaby as only Charlie can write. The other songs are great too, my album is worn down so much I may have to get the cd, but the scratches seem to give the songs character.

great country rock,

I'm surprised most people don't associate the Charlie Daniels Band as being a rock and country band combined, as opposed to just being a country/bluegrass band (which is a somewhat inaccurate description some websites and music stores label them as).
Honestly, the 11-minute title song absolutely DESTROYS pretty much every so-called rock band out there today, and easily stands alongside the very best of the rock acts from the 70's, including legendary artists and guitar jams like the one in "Free Bird". Don't even DARE tell me this song doesn't contain the same amount of intensity as that famous Lynyrd Skynyrd song. It starts off like an innocent country-tinged vocal melody before quickly morphing into quite possibly the craziest guitar jam you could ever imagine... and it's not *only* the guitars that win me over either. The piano jam is brilliant as well. When the guitar playing switches to an even heavier tone around the 7-minute mark, it seriously sounds identical to a British rock band that goes by the name of Camel (that came in the early 70's I believe). "Wichita Jail" is another highlight. A magnificent vocal melody, and a great upbeat country rocker. I love this track. "It's My Life" reminds me of Eric Clapton's more bluesier stuff (which is a style of music Clapton was actually doing around the time this Saddle Tramp album was released- probably just a coincidence). "Sweetwater, Texas" sounds like a fairly ordinary country song, but good nonetheless. I like the Charlie Daniels Band. I'm quite surprised I don't hear more fiddle playing though. I thought that's what Charlie Daniels was known for? It appears occasionally, but not as much as you'd probably expect going by, for instance, a certain popular TV commercial, haha. |
