Yet another fantastic book by Lorelei James! I really loved this book. Not 'liked' but loved!

Small summery:

Bran Turner needs a hired hand to help him through calving season as his regular guy has been in an accident and broken his hip. However, no one has responded to his advertisements and he on his own. Harper Masterson has been fired from her part-time job in a tanning salon and desperately needs money so that her little sister can go to college. There are no other job opportunities for her since most people are determined to make her pay for her mother's mistakes. Through a mutual friend Harper gets hired to help Bran through calving season, the end of which coincides with her sister graduating high school after which they can leave the small town for good. Bran has many preconceived notions about what he thinks Harper is like and will act, however, as time passes he finds out that there is much more to her than being a former Miss Sweet Grass. As they develop a time-limited relationship they explore sides of each other and themselves that they have never exposed to others.

I am normally drawn more to fictional characters that are not perfect so I was admittedly a tiny bit apprehensive about a female lead that was a former beauty queen. However, LJ is my favorite author so naturally that did not deter me and, boy, am I glad it didn't. Harper might have been a former beauty queen but she is far from perfect. She is, however, funny, sweet, caring, unselfish and in many ways insecure but most importantly she is likable. She is not the stereotypical female lead character who is so sweet and perfect it makes you grind your teeth.

Saddled and Spurred by Lorelei James
Western Romance -March 1st, 2011
4 ½ stars

This is the second in Lorelei James's contemporary western series called Blacktop Cowboys. The first was Corralled and some of the characters are featured in Saddled and Spurred. However, Saddled and Spurred can easily be read by itself.

In this enjoyable western, Bran Turner is a rancher down on his luck in a depressed area of Wyoming. His only ranch hand suffered an injury during the busiest time of the year and help is no where to be found. That is until his friend's younger sister plays a trick on him. She offers him a worker to assist him but Bran is startled to find it is the super feminine and sexy beauty queen Harper Masterson. Bran is torn, he needs a hand desperately and Hare is certainly easy on the eyes. But can she actually help?

Harper desperately needs help. She and her sister are stranded in this poor town when her mother up and left, leaving behind a scandal and some serious town resentment But Harper wants her younger sister to graduate before they get out of Wyoming for good. However, in this small town, work is difficult to find and her she has just been let go from her latest job. In a fit of self-pity, she bares all to her best friend who tells her she might have work for her. But Harper really has no idea what is in store for her or how much this job will change her life.

This book was a pleasure to read. The author really gives the reader a feel of a small western town down on its luck. She also delves into Harper and Bran's personality so they felt like real human beings. I also liked how Harper slowly adjusts to the fascinating world of ranching/farming and begins to really appreciate it.

Do NOT pass on reading Saddled and Spurred if you did not like Corralled as much as you thought you would. Saddled and Spurred is an AWESOME READ!!! I didn't want it to end!!!! LJ has a way of penning emotions so clear, it puts you right there in her books, and not just from the woman's point of view, she clearly gives us what the man is feeling as well. And she always has an ACTUAL story to go along with all the hot sex.

This book has it all steam, hot sex, drama, laughs, oh the laughs. LJ has introduced at least 10 more men and 6 more women for HOPEFULLY future stories. I can't wait!!! I love the way Bran describes how they all came to be such close friends.

Harper's story touched me on a personal level, my daughter will be going off to college in August and I can so identify with how Harper is feeling about her sister graduating. Harper's story inspired me to start putting myself first once in awhile.

LJ's Cowgirl Up And Ride from her Rough Riders series has always been my #1 favorite book ever, well Saddled And Spurred has just nudged it over so it can share my #1 spot.

Harper Masterson and Bran Turner's book. *spoilers*

Aahhh Lorelei James. What a treat to read such excellent writing. I truly get lost in her books.

I just love the characters she creates. They are just so real. I love how Bran is just a guy. He is not considered a drooly worthy mega male like some authors make out their male characters leads. I get the idea that Bran is an all round good looking man but not a "Hollywood" type character. I even love how there is a mention that his male member is not huge but a bit more on the normal size. (yes I pay attention to such details LOL)

Harper on the other hand is a many times winner Beauty Queen. However it is mentioned over and over again that she was there to earn the prize money. She comes across as a super hard worker, devoted to her sisters and generally likable character. Harper could be your girlfriend.

The book has a great set up for more books on the horizon and Lorelei James has created a great group of characters that I'd be pleased to follow from book to book just like the Rough Riders series.

There are some super sexy hot scenes as in most of Lorelei James cowboy love series but Saddled and Spurred is just so much more than a smut book. Another huge win for me is that there is a great story here and the sexy smut is a major bonus. In my opinion James writes some of the best sex scenes out there and this book did not disappoint. Hot hot hot. Also since I keep repeating how real feeling this book is, I had to smile on how their first love making scene was written. Now that is real!

I really felt the gradual love build between Harper and Bran. I also appreciated that it was a mature type of love. Not in the sense that they are an older couple because they are not.
