3.0 out of 5 stars Another solid Vicious Rumors album, August 28, 2006
This review is from: Sadistic Symphony (Audio CD)
Sadistic Symphony is the 2001 release by long running heavy metal band Vicious Rumors. Despite a frequency of lineup changes that would put King Crimson to shame, guitarist Geoff Thorpe and company have been serving up their particular blend of thrash, power and traditional metal for more than 25 years.

Sadistic Symphony isn't the band's best release, but it is still a very solid, hard-hitting heavy metal album. You can always count on Geoff Thorpe to deliver quality metal albums without any attempts to mimic the hot trend of the day, and this is no exception. The album's only weak point is the vocal performance. Morgan Thorn's voice sounds like a cross between Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) and Mandy Lion (WWIII), and has a jarring quality that actually distracts from the music. The good news is that Helstar's James Rivera is on board for the new VR CD called Warball.

In the end, Sadistic Symphony proves to be a decent Vicious Rumors album, even if it's not one of their best. This is an album that's only going to appeal to the band's die-hard fans though. New fans are better off checking out Welcome to the Ball or the band's self-titled album to get an idea of what the band is all about.

Fantastic melodic power metal. Carl is gone (RIP), Morgan has arrived. Very strong vocal work. Musicianship is A1. This album grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go til the last riff is played. LOVE IT!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Surfer, March 4, 2001

Music and arrangements are well done. Jeff is still a fantastic guitar player. Some of the old magic is there. Used to see the old band in the San Francisco Bay Area at clubs. Great music. Heard some of the songs at the Oakland Raiders Games this year and it was there I discovered they had a new album. Well done!
