This review is from: Sadness / Little Sadness / Cook the Rice / Pets (Audio CD)
To provide an honest review of "Sadness," I must first confess that I thought the corresponding LP was Perry Farrell's strongest and one of the decade's best rock albums. Along these lines, "Sadness" is a satisfying maxi-single. You already have the title track on the main album, so there are no surprises there. 'A Little Sadness' is probably the most rewarding track. It is an acoustic version of 'Sadness.' The remaining three tracks are live. 'Cook the Rice' is a quality acoustic song. While 'Pets' isn't as interesting as the version played at Woodstock '94, it is well performed. 'Pete's Dad' may not only be the most unusual song on the disc but the most unexpected tune by P*rno for Pyros. It is a self described Christmas song with themes of multiculturalism and miraculous healing. As with much of the maxi-single, it has a softer tone that foreshadows "Good God's Urge" and notes a departure from the band's hard rockin' 1993 debut. At the time of review, there were many reasonably priced copies (under $5) for sale through Amazon's marketplace sellers. Given the quality of music and the availability of affordable copies, "Sadness" is essential for the P*rno for Pyros completist.
