5.0 out of 5 stars The best kitchen gadget ever!
This is the best kitchen gadget ever (well, maybe my new fridge is as cool as that, but it costs 20 times more, so it does not count).

My god, this thing is awesome!
It actually changes the color as it heats! Yes, I know that product description says that, but reading about it is one thing; actually seeing is another. This is just sick.

1.0 out of 5 stars OK If you like the taste of plastic
After boiling water several times the water still tastes like plastic. Too bad as the functions of this keettle are great. Also cannot get company to respond to my question on whether the plastic is Biphenol-A free. A poison that gets leeched out of plastic when you heat it.

It has a built-in digital thermometer!
Now when I am desperately waiting for the kettle to heat up, not only I can see the whole thing lit up and change the color like a Christmas tree, I can also watch the thermometer counting the degrees.

The best kettle a geek can have.

Oh BTW, the tea tastes fine, it heats up pretty fast, etc, etc.

PS: Too bad it does not have a wi-fi module with SNMP on it; but next model surely will.

5.0 out of 5 stars We make a LOT of tea...., January 23, 2010

This review is from: Saeco 101167 50-Ounce Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
We have had electric water kettles for over 15 years. When the top on our latest one got worn, we bought the Saeco 1167. It's the best electric water kettle we've ever had. Most important: it shows the temperature of the water as it heats up so you can choose what degree of heat you want, which is essential if you drink a lot of tea and wonderful when you need warm water for baking. It even holds that temp if you like. It can be set to heat low, med or high; or, it can go straight to boil. The kettle pours well, too, unlike other kettles.

You can actually see the level of water from the outside, which eliminates peering into the kettle. And, although it seems like a fancy extra, the way the kettle's clear area changes color as the water heats is handy. You can tell at a quick glance, from across the room or when you're doing something else, how the water's coming along. This is very handy when you have company, or are busy with other chores.

We like this kettle so much, we have bought this particular unit for gifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, November 21, 2009

This kettle has been great. I got it for a bit less than advertised here, but what a deal. I had no problems with a "plastic" taste. I followed the instructions of boiling up two kettles of water and dumping them out before personal use. I used it for making tea at a high tea and several people asked where I got it. I use this kettle almost every day. I have only had it a few weeks and, so far, I am very pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it possible to love a tea kettle?, September 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saeco 101167 50-Ounce Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
This tea kettle is really cool! On paper it seems like it is packed with gimmicks: colour technology? temperature display? temp hold?? However, in actual use these all become very handly indeed. The neon-like color gradually changes from blue (cold) to purple (warmer) to pink (warm) to red (boiling) as the water heats up. If you are running around the house doing things, all it takes is a glance to see how close it is to "done" or if it is finished, as the light goes off completely when the water is hot.

There is a temperature display on the top of the handle, so if you are brewing a very fine tea that requires hot (but not boiling) water, you can make an accruate brew. After boiling, you can see the tem go down if it is still sitting on the base for power, so you won't burn yourself if you dump the used water out.

Finally, it also has a "keep warm" feature at 2 temperatures that I wonder why no other tea kettle has.

After washing there is no plastic taste ever at all, none. The ONLY thing I wish it had was a larger capacity (1.8 or 2 liters), but there is a fair amount of room above "Max" so I cheat a little.

In sum, a fantastic kettle and well worth the money!

This electric kettle looks great, fun to watch with all it's flashing colors, but the water tastes like plastic. I"ve had this for over a month, (should have sent it back) figured the plastic taste would subside, but it never has. Sorry to say, this product is not worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great alternative to the Capresso kettles (great overall), June 2, 2010
By

This review is from: Saeco 101167 50-Ounce Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
We had two of the Capresso 259.03 H2O Plus Glass Water Kettle, Polished Chrome, both of which died about a year after we purchased them. We decided to find an alternative and tried the Saeco, which we've had for just over a month. It's much sturdier, and the lid doesn't seem like it will break off the way it did on one of the Capressos.

In addition, the taller Saeco protects your hands when pouring so that the steam can't burn your skin. Boiling time is good, cit's quieter, and the filter is a nice addition. It can hold a lot of water, and we like that it shows the actual temperature on the handle. We wanted to make sure the kettle we purchased had an automatic shutoff feature, which the Saeco does. It also has a "keep warm" option, which we haven't used yet. The changing lights aren't really necessary but add some fun. We haven't had any issues with the water tasting like plastic, as some others have reported, nor have we experienced any bad smells.

I'll amend this review if anything goes wrong with the kettle, but so far we're very happy with the Saeco. It's a great alternative for those fed up with the cheap quality of the Capressos, but it's also a solid product on its own. We expect to use it for a long time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!, October 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saeco 101167 50-Ounce Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
For tea lovers -- finally, someone has made the ultimate tea kettle! I am not a review writer but am so pleased with this product I just had to write. How cool is this thing, 1 button to boil or, if you're like me, making tea and do not wish to boil your tea, you can choose from either low, med, or max 'WARM" setting, respectivelly, 100, 150 and 200 degree settings. The 'warming; feature sustains that setting for a full 2 hours too! comes with a spout filter for when you pour and again, if you're like me, making tea from loose leaves, the filter catches absolutely everything when you pour for nice clean cup o tea. Filter very easily pulls out for easy cleaning. Yes, half the carafe is a plastic of some sort but it tastes fine and works wonderfully. The carafe also changes color to let you know what temp it's going from AND there is a digital temp counter that tells you, at any point EXACTLY what temp your brew is at. This is the end all... for the time being. With all these big companies COMPLETELY missing the tea kettle mark, for brewing at differnet temperatures, which is SO incredibly important for certain types of brews, instead of the plug, boil and over brew problems other brands pose to tea drinkers, Saeco has filled an ENORMOUS gap in the market and are poised to win tea lovers hearts over, 1 at a time. The only suggestion I could make is to make a BPA free plastic (and it might be, I don't know and haven't checked) and market it that way too because many, many tea drinkers refuse to drink out of kettles that contain certain types of platics, and I don't blame them. I would prefer to know it is BPA free but, since this seems to be the only true versatile and large enough kettle for tea brews, I'll take what I can get. One quick note though - for some reason amazon has a page fore the exact same Saeco kettle but one is list at the $70 range while another is approx. $59 (and change)... bothe are listed as new. The rest of the web sites selling this product seem to all come in at the $59 price so I'm not sure what is up with the two very distinct prices for the exact smae, brand new product, on amazon. What's up with that, Amazon?!

1.0 out of 5 stars Geeky kettle BUT "plastic" tasting and smelling water., January 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Saeco 101167 50-Ounce Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
As a geeky type, I really wanted to keep this kettle (the lights, temperature, and controls are great.)

UNFORTUNATELY, no matter how many times (15+) I ran it with fresh water (the manual recommends twice to remove "manufacturing" residue), the boiled water has a strong "plastic" odor and taste. I'm not very sensitive to off flavors/smells but this was bad.

I had read the reviews that mentioned odor issues, but, given the other positive reviews, figured that some people are more sensitive and discounted them. I was wrong.

I'm returning it for a refund.

This review is from: Saeco 101167 50-Ounce Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
This water kettle is great for all the reasons already pointed out by other reviewers. My uncle has had two kettles of this model for quite some time now and he's never had a problem with either of them. We got our own of this type because we're often heating water for tea, and this kettle is perfect for heating the water to just the right temperatures for different varieties of tea.

My nose and taste buds are pretty sensitive, and neither I, nor anyone else in our family have ever noticed a "plastic taste" or "smell" using the three we have around. I double checked this by comparing the taste of water heated in this Saeco kettle with water heated in an all stainless steel stove-top kettle, and there was no difference. As already stated by others here, Saeco claims the plastic used in this unit is BPA free.

This is a well designed and well built appliance - recommended.
