This review is from: Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
Seeking the perfect 'superautomatic' espresso machine, we bought this model a little over 2 years ago. Worked fine for a while. Coffee quality good, nice frothing. Then, after about year, it began to leak water from beneath. When this got to the point of flooding the counter, we sought service. Nearest Saeco-registered service center (and the only one in Missouri) was 100 miles away. Dropped it off, left the required $75 deposit. It took the service shop a NINE MONTHS to receive parts. And, it turns out, not all the parts were sent. Service bill: $200 (1/3 the cost of the machine)ON WARRANY. After another 200 mile round trip, it was back in the kitchen. It lasted 2 weeks, and completely stopped functioning. Among other things, the frothing stopped working That's all for this SAECO. "Superautomatic" sounds too good to be true, and it is.

Advice:

1) don't buy SAECO machines

2) don't buy any machine lacking reviews after at least a year of use. Read a lot of reviews and you'll see that this kind of breakdown is very common among all brands of superautomatics.

3) get up early enough to make a cup of coffee yourself.

We're back to our totally reliable, unbreakable, Mukka Express.

1.0 out of 5 stars do not buy, January 22, 2011
This review is from: Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
Saeco did not work at all straight out of the box. called customer service, Kenneth B , who offered immediate replacement. However after I mailed faulty machine back it took me a month of frustration, calls, emails, etc, until finally replacement was send. Stay away from Saeco if you can. If you bought it from Costco or Starbucks just take it back, instead of Saeco recommendation in the box: "do not take it back, call us ,blah, blah"

4.0 out of 5 stars Odea Giro- Great Lightweight Model, February 8, 2012
This review is from: Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
Great lightweight basic machine. Makes one cup at a time at the push of a button (without wasteful coffee sitting in the coffee pot). Great for travel as it is lighweight and fairly small. Enjoy your cup of coffee 'away from home".

But, undertand the type of coffee you use with these machines. If using oily coffee, this is NOT the machine for you. Your grinder will need to be set to coarser setting (ask Service Repair on best approach); you will need to clean the brew group regularly AND lubricate the rew group. Oily coffee pastes and causes stress on moving parts if not cleaned/maintained. Gears, motor and grinder components will fail if NOT properly maintaining this machine when using oily coffee.

This machine works BEST with true Italian roast coffee as it does not paste so minimal maintenance. Descale every 3 months.

Hi,

We got the Odeo Giro for Christmas. We took it out of the box and did every step mentionned in the instructions for the first use...And it seems that there is an electronic problem, because the red light is on, signaling a problem with the coffee or water level, but everything is FINE, the red light keeps turning on...and still no coffee is brewing, no water is coming out of the hot water spout!!!To make the matter worse, the person who gave it to us bought it where they live (in the Usa), but gave it to us in Canada (where we live), and Saeco said that the minute the machine gets out of the Usa, the warranty in annuled!!!! what a shame! I have to say that before the Odea Giro I had the via venento fro Saeco for a few years, which was previously owned by my mother, and I NEVER had a problem with it...so

1st- Don't buy an electronic coffee machine from Saeco

2-Make sure it is not a gift for someone in Canada if you buy it in the usa!!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars GREAT COFFEE.. BAD ENGINE, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
This is a review by a Coffee Fanatic who has owned several machines, including the $8000 industrial version. I had the Vienna Plus for 8 months and decided to give that away to get the Odea Go.

The Vienna Plus had more water in the dredge drawer.. so much that I first thought the machine was leaking!! Found out that IS the way the machine works.. But the machine was bigger than the Odea, so it had room. I had to clean it out every 6-8 cups made.

The Vienna also allowed me to see the water level, so it was easy to refill.

Now for the ODEA:

Doesn't matter which model Odea you get, they're the same build. I was impressed by the BMW-designed mechanics, so I bought it for the sleeker look. Smaller unti fitted well on the small kitchen counter I have.

MAKES STRONGER COFFEE than other models of Saeco that I've tried/borrowed/owned/tasted. It's able to extract more flavor.

PROBLEMS:

1. The water container is smaller than the Vienna. And the tank is hidden, so you can NOT see when it's time to refill. YOU MUST refill before it's down to 2 cups left, because the light weight will make the sensor stop working. The sensor is not by water, but by weight of water!

2. The coffee lid can't be opened while the machine is ON. The other models can. This is weird.. because I used to be able to refill the Vienna while it's brewing.

3. The dredge drawer needs to be emptied for every 3-4 cups of coffee brewed!! Though it's not really full, the sensor will not let you brew coffee with water in this drawer!! So you will end up cleaning this every 4 cups max.

4. The drawer can't be seen, the spills can't be seen, because of the sleek design, everything is covered. And everything is BLACK, so you can't see whether you've cleaned it very well. Coffee grinds may be hidden in places you can't see... all gray and black plastic!!

WHEN MY NEW MACHINE WAS 5 WEEKS OLD, THE 3 RED LIGHTS FLASHED QUICKLY which means electrical problems. Turning it off and on did not help. Calling the manufacturer, diagnosed over the phone, and ended up to have to replace it with a new one. IT SIMPLY STOPPED WORKING.

One suggestion is to let out some steam or hot water every other day, so as to reducing the chance of clogging in the wand, overheating, or backed up water in the wand... I've gotten used to troubleshooting and taking this machine apart... We're doing the THIRD exchange withs Saeco directly from OHIO this week...

So far this is a great little espresso machine. It makes very smoothe espresso from a variety of bean roasts. It does use lots of water going through its different cycles. We are on a well & must use distilled water in the machine so this is an added expense for us. Also, this machine only "froths" the milk not steam it which may be imporntant to you. All in all we are happy with the purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars I would say average, March 13, 2011
This review is from: Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
I bought a similar model just before xmas the Odea Go Black. It looks the same but is black. So far it works just fine. The coffee is a as good as the previews machine it replaces. I use Lavazza Oro and the taste is excellent especially over vanilla ice-cream. Obviously you have to use good quality coffee and select the shortest brew amount. The only complaint I have is that frothing skim milk doesn't work, which worked fine with my previews Alessi machine.

In general these machine last about 4 years. So it's wise to buy a not too expensive model since in 4 years from now you'll be buying a new one. I got mine for 400 dollars at costco and so far am pleased.

1.0 out of 5 stars VERY WEAK, January 27, 2011
This review is from: Saeco 658 Odea Giro 15-Bar-Pump Automatic Espresso Machine (Kitchen)
I HAD THIS SAECO ODEA ECLIPSE (ALL BLACK) MODEL FOR EXACTLY 10 DAYS. MY SON HAD A SAECO (DIFFERENT MODEL) AND HE LOVED IT. SO WHEN I FOUND THIS MODEL BY SAECO I GRABBED IT.VERY EASY TO USE. WE ENJOY REGULAR COFFEE AS OPPOSED TO EXPRESSO, BUT WE DO LIKE TO TASTE THE RICHNESS IN THE COFFEE BEANS. FROM THE VERY FIRST CUP THE COFFEE WAS HOT BUT WEAK.. TRIED CHANGING THE GRINDER HOPING THE COURSER OR FINER GRIND WOULD HELP BUT IT DID NOT. GAVE IT A WEEK, AND PACKED IT UP AND SENT BACK. JUST ORDERED THE BOSCH B20. HOPING THIS WILL WORK.

I have had this machine about a month. It tools little time for it to work the new ess out and for me to figure out the best way to make my morning Cappuccino. It is really pretty easy. I can steam the milk first and then just put the cup with the foamed milk under the coffee spout, set for strong Espresso, push the coffee button twice and it grinds then expresses a little water into the coffee, pauses and then out comes the first shot, then it automatically does the second shot. I really like the machine. Lights let you know when it needs beans(I use Starbucks Espresso Roast) water or to dumb the dreg box.

Espresso has a great Crema and the Steam wand makes very creamy foam. It works fast, not too noisy. Easy clean up, just rinse the steam wand off and surface wipe machine. It looks nice on my counter too. Sometimes I even have a second cup.
