The only replica of an armored fish available-great for teachers or paleo buffs who love and study our ancient world. The color is conjectural of course but the detail is the real deal.
An excellent addition to anyone's dino/paleo collection.

I got one of these beauties at the Dinosaur Store in Cocoa Beach, Florida (which will be opening its splendid new building later this year -- 2008 -- in case you are lucky enough to live in the area which I do not). Dunkleosteus was a huge, dramatically armored fish of the ancient seas, and if you have been to museums you may have seen him as a replica or a partial-fossil-model or in a mural. I especially like the related exhibit at the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY -- you might like it too (and they had toy trilobites there). Or you may have seen him in one of those computer-simulated TV shows. It's a cool fish.

This is a nicely sized toy, big enough for some serious detail, and it has a ferocious open mouth. Whether you are a kid in need of a wicked beastie or an adult dino hobbyist, or something in between or beyond, you are likely to enjoy this fish!

Oh, and for the curious... My coelacanth is one of those small Japanese snap-together models (gashapon?), but very beautiful, and I got it from UDF on eBay but their store seems to be gone.

I have just purchased two of these models and I am very happy with them. I use them as a drawing model and decoration and it is awesome. It has a wonderfull paint job and when I compared the two one looked a little darker on some spots but thats ok because it has a realy cool metalic tint to make it look like a fish.

The only thing about it was in between their noses is a seam line was noticable but nothing wrong and and the pait can easaly chip.

Overal I think they are realy good

5.0 out of 5 stars My Prehistoric Fish Loving Son Loves It., May 7, 2010

Dunkie (as my 5 year old son has named him) is everything a prehistoric fish nut could want. As with all Safari Ltd toys, he is finely detailed, nicely sized and beautifully painted. You can not tell by the picture, but he actually has a metallic finish to the paint, which is really cool. He is made of a hard durable resin, however as with most resin toys the tips of his fins have started to wear away and some of the paint has been scratched off. But despite this slight expected wear and tear, Safari Ltd animal figures are some of the most durable figures I have found. I think they are equal in quality to Schleich, but a little less expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dunkleosteus fishasaurus, March 28, 2009
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

This is every bit as awesome as you think it's going to be, plus the fins are out so it can give you hugs when you're sad. Also although it's hard to see in the pictures, but the paint is a metallic bronze/gold/copper so the colortaion is pretty awesome.

However, unlike the latin name implies, I don't think it intended to be dunked in hot beverages.

Nice detailed replica. Rather small however. Good for educational purposes. I would recommend the purchase to a friend. Interesting story behind this dinosaur.

My 3 yr old is crazy about all sharks and ocean related prehistoric monster. This replica is so beautiful! He practically sleeps, eats and takes his bath with his "monster fish" as he calls it. Lots of fun, great details and durable. Highly recommended.

I love this thing. Colorful and open-mouthed! You rarely see this animal as a toy so I was pleased to find this gem. Great work.

There were many fascinating prehistoric animals long before the dinosaurs besides Dimetrodon, and Schliech is one of the few companies to have realized that. This is the ONLY prehistoric fish toy I have ever seen, so it's fortunate that it's a good one. The price is right and the toy is fairly large, tough, and well-detailed. Ol' Dunky is an excellent way to add some flavor to your prehistoric collection. Diversify, I say!

After seeing the DVD Chased by Sea Monsters, my son was all about the sea creatures from the dinosaur age. There aren't too many of these guys available in toy form and Dunkleosteus was one of the few I found.
He's made of the usual hard plastic and stands up to play. He's painted pretty close to what we saw in the DVD. He comes in at about 5 inches long.
"Dino-Kids" will have fun with this guy in out of of the tub for quite a while! Recommended.
