We recently got a cockapoo rescue. He has some behavior issues and a visit to a groomer was not something we were eager to try just yet. I remembered I had a 'mat buster' for my old English sheepdog years ago. I found this Safari mat remover online and it seemed to be a smaller version of what I had before so went to PetSmart to get one. They don't carry it in their stores, I think it competes too much with their grooming salon services! So I ordered from Amazon and it quickly came from this company. It's great! Our dog is apprehensive about most things but he tolerates brief sessions with this grooming aid, followed by regular brushing. His coat is the typical poodle/cocker hair, not much for shedding but inclined to small tangles and mats. I have most of his coat looking great and able to pass a comb through what had been a nightmare. I only hope the blades will stay sharp for a while, but it is cheap enough to order another when needed. If our hypersensitive guy will tolerate use of this mat remover, it definitely doesn't cause much discomfort. If used gently and briefly, I could recommend it for any long-haired breed with mats and tangles.

I have two cockapoos, a full size and a toy, who are both wonderful and warm dogs with that fluffy, curly and soft mix of the cocker spaniel and poodle coats without any undercoat. Unfortunately, this also means that they have high maintenance hair and are very prone to getting matted - especially after time spent at the dog run or in the rain. For a long time, I struggled with a comb and a brush to get their matts out and the really tough ones I had to carefully cut out with scissors. Fortunately, I can ditch the scissors and dealing with matts is less of a hassle now that I have the Safari Mat Remover.

This brush does a great job of cutting right through the matts and pulling out the tangles. It is also sturdy and has grip on the handle as well as a grip above the blade area for when you need to get in close or use with caution (like around the paws or ears). It seems very well built and hopefully the blades will last a while. The only I reason I don't give this a full 5 stars is because it can sometimes be a hassle to get the dead/trimmed hair out of the blades on this brush. It would have been nice if they built a retracting mechanisms of some sort - similar to the Safari Self Cleaning Slicker Brush.

There are a few things to keep in mind with this brush and using it to deal with matted areas of your dog's coat:

* The brush has blades, nested inside the curl of the brush head, and therefore you must use caution when getting close to your pups skin or paws. Between the blades there are dull metal "twisties" that seem to be there to further break up tangles. These will definitely pull hair out - as opposed to cut or thin out - if the area is really matted rather than just tangled.

I have a mini-schnauzer who HATES the groomer, HATES the brush, HATES the vacuum, and HATES the gardener (but, I digress). We spent about an hour working on his tangles and this tool worked GREAT! I am so happy to have a normal looking schnauzer once again! (Before this tool, he looked like George Clinton, minus the sunglasses.)

This is the best comb I've found to remove tangles and mats from my dog. I have a Lhasa Apso so his hair gets very long and thick. This comb has definitely cut down my grooming time by an hour and does not hurt the dog.

It fits nicely in my hand and being able to switch it from left to right-handed is a plus. The grip helps you keep good control over it. I bought mine to aid in grooming my angora rabbits. For a nice coat you don't want use scissors or clippers to remove small mats. It proved to be a huge help a few days after it received it when I got a rabbit that had been severely neglected. His long hair had formed a filthy shell that encased the back half of his body. After cutting it free his skin was so sensitive that just touching him put him into panic mode. I was unable to brush the remaining fur to get out the tangles without hurting him. The mat remover went right through them so quickly he barely flinched. He now takes great enjoyment from being brushed and groomed and is a very happy bunny.

I just used it on my very macho Maine Coon cat who had 5 mats all over his back. I had to use gloves to escape his claws but I got it all out successfully. You have to start combing little by little from the top so that it slowly shaves off the mat. I am very happy with my purchase
